Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The purpose of the International Programs Center (IPC) is to coordinate and develop the University’s international activities as well as to ensure that the University achieves its international goals as stated in its Strategic Plans. Specific activities include: developing and managing the Study Abroad and Exchanges programs; managing the faculty-led programs; advising and retention of international students and visiting scholars; providing support services including immigration and practical training placement for international (F1) and exchange students (J1) and visiting scholars; securing funding for international-related projects for the faculty, departments, and university; developing and managing outreach programs to the local schools, businesses, and community. IPC houses the Global Engagement Office, responsible for UNCG’s QEP. IPC also serves as the liaison for the Interlink Language Programs and the central administration unit for the UNC International Recruitment Consortium (UNC IRC).

Position Summary:

The Associate Director is responsible for providing our diverse student body with access to global engagement opportunities through the full-cycle management and administration of all education abroad programs (including faculty-led, virtual programs, research abroad, and global internships) for 450+ students. The oversight of education abroad will require providing direct service, management, and supporting the development of policy as it relates to comprehensive internationalization, crisis management, program development, financial management, office administration, student advising, and student health and safety.

The Associate Director will provide direct support and leadership to a full-time staff of two Assistant Directors and a Study Abroad Coordinator. They may also supervise several student workers as well.

While the Associate Director reports directly to the Senior Director of International Programs to administer and expand UNCG’s study abroad and exchange programs, they will also work closely with and be advised by the UNC Greensboro Associate Provost for International Programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

The incumbent must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident as required by federal regulations in order to serve as an ARO. A bachelor’s degree is required. Outstanding intercultural sensitivity, exemplary written and verbal competency, excellent computer skills, and experience working, living, and/or studying abroad is also required.

The incumbent must be able to relate to students of diverse backgrounds and work effectively with multiple administrative and academic offices. This position requires the ability to develop and interpret policies and procedures of both UNCG and partner institutions and advise stakeholders accordingly.

Preferred Qualifications:

A master’s degree with an international focus or in a related field is preferred.

Three to five years of experience working in the education abroad field, preferably in a public higher educational system like UNC, would be advantageous to this position.

Key Responsibility:

Contributing to Comprehensive Internationalization

Essential Tasks:

Sharing and disseminating information on current issues in international higher education, the field of education abroad, and international mobility trends with staff and the University for strategic planning purposes.

Communicating implications of data analysis to upper administration.

Analyzing education abroad data to support internationalization at UNC Greensboro.

Supporting international and domestic visitors from partner institutions and organizations.

Working with academic departments to achieve curricular integration of their offerings with education abroad program offerings.

Developing and articulating a clear vision and goals for the growth and enhancement of education abroad opportunities at UNC Greensboro.

Exhibiting patterns of service to UNC Greensboro and the wider community through participation in appropriate university committees (such as the University-Affiliated International Travel Review Committee, the Study Abroad Committee, and IPC Advisory Committee), as well as professional organizations (such as NAFSA: Association of International Educators and their state and regional affiliates and other groups).

Crisis Management & Student Health and Safety

Essential Tasks:

Responsible for analyzing risks abroad and providing updates and detailed strategies to mitigate risks.

Serving in an “on-call” capacity to respond to international emergencies.

Collaborating with relevant local and global partners to establish emergency communication protocols to be shared with faculty, staff, and students.

Developing policies and procedures for health and safety, risk reduction, and crisis management.

Developing, reviewing, and updating relevant forms with legal counsel.

Program Development and Implementation

Essential Tasks:

The day-to-day management and oversight of all education abroad programs and working closely with the Senior Director and the Associate Provost for International Programs to create a variety of new programs aimed at diversifying education abroad.

Operationalizing all activities related to the education abroad programs including recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and providing pre-departure and reentry support for students; supporting the study abroad course; coordinating transfer of credit; supporting incoming exchange students (as needed); as well as developing and administering faculty-led and virtual programs.

Coordinating data collection and evaluative procedures to ensure that programs meet the educational and programmatic needs of its participants.

Acting as an advocate for international education experiences and serving as the principal liaison with faculty and academic units to integrate international experiences into the curricula.

Maintaining student exchange balances.

Assisting with agreements and fostering mutually beneficial and ethical relationships with international partners.

Supervising and providing support for 3 full-time staff members and student assistants.

Assisting with and ensuring education abroad payments are made in compliance with university protocols.

Coordinating with the financial aid office regarding financial aid and/or scholarships for students.

Collaborating with the grants and development office to develop strategies to obtain funding for students and
programs.

Administering travel grant program.

Overseeing education abroad office budget.

Developing strategies to foster participation from underrepresented student populations and academic disciplines.
