Educational and Experience Requirement:

Bachelor’s degree in humanities-based field, Master’s degree or PhD preferred. 4 years related experience, including 1-4 years of experience working for a university press, a well-established literary press, or literary journal, as an Editorial, Design, & Production Manager or Managing Editor with some design responsibilities. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Nature & Purpose of Position:

Designs, produces, and delivers printed books, E-books, digital media, promotional materials, and other related design work. Performs complex managerial work administering the daily operations and activities of The Texas Review Press.

Primary Responsibilities:

Responsible for all production, design, and delivery of printed books by pre-established deadlines; including securing copy editing, designing covers, preparing proofs, and any other tasks related to production. Responsible for sending final book files for E-book conversions and checking E-book files for correctness, formatting, and delivery to distributor. Responsible for catalog and webpage graphic design. Registers books with the Library of Congress. Manages the activities of staff in the Texas Review Press (TRP). Ensures authors are fully aware of time frames for manuscript changes to keep proof stage changes to a minimum. Responsible for proofreading against copy all books or communication produced by the press (final proofs, copyedited manuscripts, cover copy, blurbs, bios, book descriptions, front and back matter, table of contents, acknowledgments, praise pages, series pages, CIP data, title pages), postcards, posters, ad copy, TRP website, and all social media posts. Handles publicity for specific books or authors, including social media, conference or exhibitions, readings, blurbs, award considerations, etc. Manages press mailings. Develops schedules, priorities, and standards for achieving goals. Identifies areas of needed change and makes recommendations to improve operations. Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of others. Oversees the preparation of management and productivity reports and studies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications:

Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws. Ability to manage business functions. Communicates with other university departments, personnel, and other agencies. Thorough knowledge of academic book publishing processes required. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively transmit, receive and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods and behaviors at a working proficiency level is required. Highly developed interpersonal skills are a must for this position. Working proficiency in the use of computer software applications is required, MS Word and Excel. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite is preferred. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks. Demonstrated working proficiency communicating with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive manner. Knowledge of trends in electronic publishing, basic publishing permissions, rights, fair use policies, and The Chicago Manual of Style is required. Working knowledge of contracts, permissions, and royalties required.
