Engineering Laboratory Specialist
The Department of Physics and Engineering Science at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for an Engineering Laboratory Specialist Position beginning spring 2021 in support of its Engineering Science B.S. Program. This position will also include teaching responsibilities.

This position will serve as both as Engineering Laboratory Specialist as well as an Instructor. Job duties include, but are not limited to: oversee undergraduate student workers that prepare, set‐up, and maintain materials and equipment for use in the classroom and machine shop as demonstrations, experiments, and learning activities; responsible for implementing and overseeing design cornerstones/capstones in coordination with instructors of record, and assuring that the technical skills of graduates are sufficient for post-college success; in concert with the University’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety, will be responsible for establishing and maintaining safety protocols in a workshop used primarily for faculty and student projects; in the instructional role, the successful applicant will teach at least two introductory engineering courses per semester (e.g., engineering material science, introduction to engineering, laboratory demonstrations and courses, etc.); provide laboratory technical support for the Program’s teaching/research/service activities; help with the labs, course assessment preparations and evaluation; maintain safe lab environment and laboratory safety certification; supervise the work of users and students working in the lab; manage the labs and workshop scheduling and services for users and provide necessary and appropriate guidance regarding the proper use; responsible for managing and coordinating laboratory and testing facilities, equipment, supplies, and scheduling to support students and faculty for their research and educational activities; coordinate with the instrument suppliers/manufactures for services and troubleshooting; oversee and coordinate laboratory operations and facilities those containing computers and the associated tools and equipment that support instruction; order, purchase, and maintain inventories of equipment and supplies needed for testing purposes, establish and maintain the records of instrument times and operating conditions; make recommendations for lab facility update; develop policies and procedures for maintaining and upgrading the tools, equipment, computing resources, and laboratories used by students and faculty in the program; create, maintain and update webpage for the lab; and other duties as assigned.

The position encourages engaging undergraduate engineering students through active advising and mentoring extra-curricular groups. The successful applicant will also be responsible for implementing and overseeing design cornerstones/capstones in coordination with instructors of record, and assuring that the technical skills of graduates are sufficient for post-college success. Required to teach at least two introductory engineering courses per semester (e.g., engineering material science, introduction to engineering, laboratory demonstrations and courses, etc.).

Qualifications: a master’s degree in materials science & engineering, or a related discipline which includes 18 credit hours of graduate course work in the relevant subject matter area and teaching experience is required. A PhD in material science and experience with remote teaching and online learning is preferred. As part of a successful interview process, candidates will be expected to provide a demonstration of teaching effectiveness and evidence of understanding diverse populations. The ability to obtain P.E. license within two years of employment at Coastal Carolina is preferred. Experience teaching, working with, and supporting a diverse student population is desired.
