Department Summary:

As the chief communications organization for the University of North Texas, the Division of University Brand Strategy and Communications collaborates with internal and external partners to:

  • Advance and protect UNT’s institutional identity and reputation.
  • Reinforce and grow UNT’s brand in graphics, images and words.
  • Increase UNT’s visibility in public and in the higher education marketplace.
  • Support UNT’s student recruitment, retention and graduation goals.
  • Strengthen UNT’s relevance and value to key audiences, including alumni, donors, faculty and staff members, and encourage community engagement.

Position Overview:

To support the mission of the university by writing and managing content for the university web site and institutional social media which markets UNT to key audiences, promotes the image of the institution to internal and external constituencies and helps increase undergraduate and graduate enrollment and retention; to develop, organize and create social media content that will maximize the University of North Texas’ exposure; and other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of experience in writing and/or editing publications; or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to conceptualize, write and edit strategic, accurate and concise content for university audiences.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, conduct multiple tasks and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to visually inspect print and online copy when self-editing or editing the copy of others
  • Works effectively within a team and effectively works closely with other staff, faculty, and students toward a common goal.
  • Extensive knowledge of spelling, grammar, punctuation and Associated Press and Chicago Manual styles.
  • Knowledge of writing styles and guidelines for various media formats and ability to create, coordinate and edit copy for each format (print, digital/social media, video, broadcast, etc.).
  • Understanding of institutional strategy (or ability to quickly assimilate) and ability to integrate the strategy into modes of communication.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of others.
  • Knowledge of and ability to research industry best practices to assist the division, college or unit in aligning strategies for UNT publications (print and digital) with University strategy and guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications: * Minimum of three to five years coordinating and planning strategies and content for branded social media channels (NOT personal social media accounts) * Experience administering brand social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (again NOT personal social accounts). * Possess the ability to create and execute campaigns and strategies and to plan, supervise and coordinate content creation and to review created content. * Familiarity with social media management sites and reporting platforms such as Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Radian 6 and Facebook Insights and must possess the ability to use these tools to report social media metrics. * Must be able to exhibit sound judgment when engaging with and managing the social media community and serve as the leader for social media for URCM and UNT. * Scheduled work time will include some nights and weekends.

Understands UNT’s and UBSC’s mission and strategic goals, as well as key messaging, and works to help meet those goals as part of teams and independently.

o:

Works to create strategic content that aligns and embeds messaging across social channels and key websites to build the university’s image and reputation.

o:

Understands university audiences and creates audience targeted content that is accurate and strategic. This includes writing for audiences across all primary UNT social channels and in UNT websites and emails.

o:

Creates content that supports university initiatives and advances the university’s vision and goals, highlights UNT’s growth as a student-centered research university and provides an entertaining, engaging and informative experience.

o:

Works to protect and promote the image of the president by writing and editing content and understanding key messages and reworking those into other materials as appropriate.

o:

Participates in the execution of UNT’s content strategies as they relate to social media channels and makes recommendations for improvement, as necessary.

o:

Researches, conceives, writes and formats copy for social media channels, taking pains to ensure consistency in style, tone, quality and accuracy.

o:

Uses UNT audience research and web analytics and demonstrates sound professional judgment as the basis for all decisions.

o:

Coordinates with supervisors to collaborate with creative and web designers, photographers/videographers and other UBSC team members in the creation of written/visual/video/graphic content for promotion on UNT social channels.

o:

Creates links for social networks that can be tracked for traffic analysis.

o:

Facilitates social media conversations daily, which includes creating engaging copy and promoting conversations on social channels through interaction with fans/followers, etc. on a day-to-day basis.

o:

Participates in the creation and execution of content strategies for social networks and websites.

o:

Serves as essential personnel during a crisis and is available to meet the social media management and engagement needs a crisis situation would bring.

o:

As assigned, serves on UBSC committees and project work groups while balancing normal daily tasks and responsibilities.

o:

Creates/maintains/proofs content for official social media channels (and websites, as assigned) to ensure that all copy is relevant, accurate and follows the university web policy and legal outlines.

o:

Actively looks for trends and themes on social to leverage on UNT’s social media properties to increase opportunities to engage with the audience. Does this daily, one night shift every three weeks and one weekend per quarter.

o:

Works with UBSC departments to develop content strategies and works to brand UNT in social media with key markets.

o:

Provides input and helps develop new social media policies, guidelines and best practices to aid UNT departments in meeting social media goals.

o:

Shares expertise and ideas freely and openly and participates in enhancing UNT coworkers’ understanding of mission and tasks involving social media.

o:

Researches and collaborates with other offices as needed to write and develop social media content or coordinate responses on UNT’s social network.

o:

Frequently monitors environmental (and university) changes that impact social media content positioning or information; effects changes in a timely manner.
