Position Title: Academic Intervention Specialist

Department: Center for Academic and Professional Performance (CAPP)

FLSA Category: Exempt

Working Relationship:

  • Reports to: Senior Director of CAPP
  • Works Closely with: CAPP Staff members, University faculty, Center for International Education.
  • Directly supervises: Para-Professional Staff Members for CAPP

About the CAPP:

Using a strength-based framework and guided by trauma informed practices, the staff in the Center for Academic and Professional Performance (CAPP) connects to students throughout their Millikin experience and beyond by providing wrap-around personal, academic and career support.

Job Summary: Under the guidance of the Senior Director of the CAPP, the Academic Intervention Specialist manages the University’s supplemental instruction and tutoring programs, engages in individual and group career coaching and developmental advising, and also teaches 100 level courses aimed at student success outcomes. The Specialist also works closely with the international student population at the University. Evening and weekend responsibilities are required for this position.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Using the frameworks of strengths-based advising and trauma informed practices, provide individualized and developmental advising and career coaching support and resources for students from all backgrounds and ability levels:
    • Develop personalized plans for improvement and monitoring student progress throughout the semester.
    • Provide guidance for resume, cover letter, and other career-related documents or activities.
  • Oversee, manage, and evaluate the University’s supplemental instruction (SI) and tutoring programs to include the determination of courses for SI and tutoring, the selection and training of para-professional staff members, and the assessment of program outcomes.
  • Serve as the instructor and develop content for one-credit student success related courses.
    • IN113-01: Exploratory Studies (for students with an undeclared focused on developing their academic identity and choice of major)
    • IN113-02: College foundations
    • IN110-01: Co-teach Strategies for Academic Success with other professional staff in CAPP (or students on academic probation)
    Serve as the formal liaison between the CAPP and the Center for International Education.
    • Advise the International Student Organization and direct appropriate programming to support the success and persistence of international students.
    • Directly advise all one semester International exchange students.
    • Provide support as requested to international students who are interested and qualified to pursue CPT and OPT options within the United States.
    • Participate in campus-wide committees related to international student success.
    Serve as a Student Development Advisor within the MilliKinship retention program, advising a caseload of assigned students. This includes, but is not limited to: contacting and meeting with advisees, collaborating with academic advisors, faculty, and other partners; using technology platforms to record student interactions and access student information, and attending required training and professional development regarding advising students.
  • Coordinate and support student’s career explorations and assist in planning office events related to professional preparation.
  • Serve as an advocate for student success through frequent attendance at campus and community programs, events, and activities.

Minimum Position Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Work, or Counseling required; a Master’s Degree in Education, Social Work or Counseling or related field preferred.
  • Experience in teaching K-12 or remedial college coursework.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and technology skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, student information systems, and emerging technologies.

Preferred Position Qualifications

  • Experience in the development and creation of innovative student service programs.
  • Demonstrated understanding and strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience in academic plans and working with students with disabilities.
  • Ability to work in partnership with staff, faculty, administrators, and student leaders.
  • Understanding of student development with competence in departure theory, involvement theory, and other student development theories.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment, meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, and reprioritize projects as needed.
