Primary Purpose

The Director of Teaching and Learning provides leadership for the College’s overall Teaching and Learning initiatives to promote quality instruction for student success and retention. This position coordinates the development and training of faculty and supervises staff in best practices for teaching and learning.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Coordinates and provides leadership and planning for the College’s Teaching and Learning programs

• Supervises staff members in teaching, learning, and instructional design

• Supervises the development and maintenance of the College’s web resources and online tutorials.

• In cooperation with the instructional deans and chairs oversees the orientation and onboarding of new faculty, both full and part-time

• Coordinates an annual adjunct instructor orientation in cooperation with academic deans and chairs

• Works with Human Resources, deans, and chairs to coordinate faculty professional development and a faculty mentoring program

• Coordinates and implements workshops, training, and tutorials for online curriculum and continuing education faculty

• Works cooperatively with faculty and the Assessment Committee to promote appropriate student learning outcomes in courses and programs during the instructional design

• Works with other community college personnel and the Community College System state office in the coordination of instructional projects

• Works with faculty to coordinate Instructional Service Agreements (ISA) when appropriate

• Serves on campus committees and fulfills other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Instruction

• Works cooperatively as necessary with the Associate Vice President / CIO for Technology

• Ensures compliance and confidentiality with all policies and procedures of the College, NC Community College System, and applicable State and Federal agencies

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversees the implementation of the College’s QEP (until 2024), maintains necessary records, and submits necessary reports for its duration

• Perform other duties as assigned

Education

Masters in Instructional Design, Education, Higher Education Curriculum, Assessment, or a related field with significant higher education teaching experience.

Experience

• Experience working in instructional technology, preferably in higher education

• Experience teaching, preferably in higher education

• Experience developing and delivering training and support services for teaching and learning;

• Knowledge of and experience in the application of best practices in educational technologies, instructional design, and quality course delivery;

• Experience with a Learning Management System (LMS);

• Demonstrated knowledge of Regional College Accreditation requirements and best practices as related to educational technologies and online education;

Preferred Qualifications:

• Higher education online teaching experience, preferably at the community college level;

• Experience supervising others, particularly within a higher education setting

• Strong technical writing skills and experience developing training materials;

• Knowledge of streaming audio and video;

• Familiarity with visual design elements appropriate for web-based instruction and learning;

• Proven ability to coordinate and direct multiple projects with faculty and staff

• Familiarity with the “Moodle” LMS

• Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects with varying priorities.

• Leadership skills to be able to delegate tasks and mentor staff and faculty

• Knowledge of LMS systems – specifically Moodle

• Knowledge of HTML/CSS

• Working experience with various multimedia software for course enrichment (Camtasia, Dreamweaver, etc.);

• Expert knowledge of current Microsoft Office software;

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

• Superior interpersonal and team-oriented aptitude;

• Ability to work collaboratively in a higher education environment;

• Ability to advise faculty in the design, development, and implementation of technology that supports and enhances quality instruction and student learning;

• Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to students and staff;

• Demonstrate and model employability soft skills including adaptability, communications, information processing, problem-solving, responsibility, and teamwork

Working Conditions: Indoor office environment; moderate level of interruptions; frequent deadlines; occasional irregular work hours.
