Compensation: Starting salary is $40,336.58. Compensation package is comprised of many college paid benefits including health and life insurance, retirement, leave time, and tuition waivers for Santa Fe College and the University of Florida.

Description:

Santa Fe College’s Natural Sciences within the Academic Affairs division of Liberal Arts and Sciences provides pre-professional instruction to guide the development of the next generation of engineers, physicians, and scientists. The Natural Sciences Department also provides non-sciences majors with general education science courses to enable them to understand and appreciate the role of the sciences in daily life and the world community.

The Department of Natural Sciences is currently seeking an outgoing, enthusiastic and energetic Advising Specialist to conduct recruitment, advising and graduate tracking for the Zoo Animal Technology Program. The Zoo Animal Technology Program is a unique program that offers an Associate of Science degree and requires students to work as Zookeepers in an accredited zoo, the SF Teaching Zoo, which is on the grounds of the college. The working environment is dynamic and requires excellent customer service skills in order to interact with guests, students and employees in a respectful and positive manner. A great candidate will be able to inspire interested students to join the program while providing honest feedback regarding the challenges posed by this unique career choice. The Advising Specialist will nurture an environment of student-centered support while growing an inclusive and equity focused program. The Advising Specialist is scheduled to work Tuesday through Saturday every week.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Participate in all areas of advisement, including recruitment and marketing, conduct academic advisement, facilitate registration, and complete reporting requirements as assigned.

  • Coordinate the creation of recruitment materials (fliers, website, etc.)

  • Speak to small and large groups of potential students and their parents, explaining program, transfer opportunities, affiliations, and employment potential.

  • Respond to student inquiries and requests for information via phone, email, Zoom, Facebook, etc.

  • Evaluate admission materials from potential students and responding appropriately in a timely manner.

  • Perform admission interviews.

  • Track student progress through the program while providing guidance as needed.

  • Maintain graduate mailing list, communicate with student/graduates about potential jobs, surveys and newsletters for the SF Teaching Zoo.

  • Work with staff to maintain accurate graduate records and utilize them appropriately.

  • Collaborate with the Counseling Center, Career Resource Center, Office for Advancement, and other offices across campus in order to provide resources and support for students.

  • Maintain positive relationship with Office of Admissions to ensure smooth transfer of students and coordinate tours of the SF Teaching Zoo and assigned areas of the Zoo Animal Technology program.

  • Represent the Zoo Animal Technology Program at recruiting events.

  • Network with area schools, creating mutually beneficial relationships for SF and the partner school.

  • Assist with various special events, including Boo at the Zoo, Party for the Planet, Zookeeper Day, etc.

  • Provide support and back up as needed to ensure adequate coverage and supervision of the reception desk.

  • Coordinate program graduations by acting as the liaison between students, staff and SF facilities.

  • Work as a positive and effective team member in a dynamic environment.

  • Provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement.

Reports to: Director, Zoo Animal Technology Program

Qualifications:

Required: A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with two (2) years of related work experience is required.

Additional Requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted.

Preferred: Experience in advisement or counseling is preferred.
