Job Overview:

As an integral member of the Division of Student Life, the Director of Community Standards strives to create a fair and just community by promoting student responsibility, accountability, and ethical decision making and civility. Rhodes College has a long culture and tradition of Honor. The Rhodes Honor System consists of the Honor Code, the Social Regulations Code, and the Rhodes Commitment to Diversity. By participating in the Honor System, all who make up the Rhodes College community maintain the values by which we live together. At the beginning of each school year, all incoming students sign a pledge affirming their commitment. The Director of Community Standards will support the continued history and tradition of Honor at the College. The Director will seek innovative ways to educate students on their rights and responsibilities as members of an academic community, and to help students develop the decision-making skills necessary to act with personal and social responsibility. Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director will provide leadership, management and oversight of Community Standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Leading Community Standards

  • Administer all aspects of the College's student conduct process and serve as the chief administrative hearing officer.
  • Develop and deliver educational programs that facilitate understanding of College policy.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection and training of members of conduct boards, including Community Standards Council, Honor Council, and assist with sexual misconduct and Title IX boards and panels as needed.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and thorough records on all judicial cases including dean's certification forms.
  • Represent the Office of Community Standards and the Division of Student Life on pertinent committees, task forces and projects.
  • Coordinate the parental notification process for alcohol and drug violations and communicates with parents regarding student behavior in accordance with FERPA guidelines.
  • Coordinate the office's assessment plan.
  • Provide leadership in the development and assessment of College policies. Including but not limited to policies related to student conduct.


Supporting Care and Wellness

  • Work with colleagues to support students toward a successful Rhodes experience. Serve as member of student response team and share on-call administrator duties with other staff.
  • Advise and support students and parents regarding behavioral issues and other obstacles impacting student ability to meet goals.
  • Advise and support students in conflict resolution skill development including mediation and other methods for engaging in and resolving interpersonal and group conflict.
  • Serve as resource for commuter students. Including support and education of commuter students on off-campus rights and responsibilities.


Ensuring Administrative Effectiveness

  • Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Supervise, train and evaluate student leaders and student staff associated with Community Standards.
  • Maintain a cooperative relationship with Physical Plant staff, Campus Safety officers and Division of Student Life staff; Collaborates effectively with a variety of departments throughout the college and in the community.
  • Fulfill on-call responsibilities on a rotating basis; As needed assist with crisis intervention and management, stabilizing the situation and coordinating the notification of the appropriate college officials/referral agencies.



Job Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in higher education administration, student personnel or related field required.
  • Minimum of five years professional work experience in higher education required (student conduct preferred).



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of Compliance & Risk Management

  • Extensive knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and policies
  • Proven leadership in the area of risk management
  • Ability and experience in investigating and responding to risk management and wellness concerns
  • Knowledge and experience with policies and legal issues in higher education
  • Knowledge of FERPA, Clery and Title IX
  • Experience with Maxient or other related conduct software packages


Ability to provide leadership and supervise staff and manage environments

  • Able to work independently in a highly productive and fast-paced environment
  • Ability to provide consultation and coaching for managers, supervisors, staff, faculty and administrators
  • Ability to mediate and use problem-solving skills to conduct alternative dispute resolution
  • A thorough understanding of the organizational management of student affairs including partnership building with students, faculty, staff, parents, and community
  • Ability to provide perspective and utilize a proactive style of leadership that encourages teamwork and interaction
  • Ability to work with a culturally diverse population, promote a campus climate of inclusion and participation by all students
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and to make sound judgments and decisions


Strong Communications Skills

  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of student services and deep commitment to the connection between the curricular and co-curricular spheres of a college community
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and the ability to deal with complex and sometimes sensitive issues
  • Ability to handle confidential information
  • Ability to effectively present information to large groups of people


Collaborative and Relational Approach

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships across campus with special attention to Dean of Students, Residence Life, Campus Safety, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Student Activities, Inclusion and Involvement, Counseling Center, and Communications
  • Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, and families in order to establish and maintain good working relationships
  • Flexible and evening and weekend hours will be required
