Associate Vice President/Dean of Students – Student Life, Vacancy 605288

Occupying a highly visible and influential position on campus, the Associate Vice President/Dean of Students will provide energetic and visionary leadership in furtherance of student success and the University's strategic plan. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President/Dean of Students will lead, inspire, mentor, and supervise the dynamic team of student affairs professionals that comprise the university's programs that support student engagement and inclusive excellence.

The Associate Vice President/Dean of Students is responsible for creating and maintaining a campus environment that supports and sustains student success through collaboration with Academic Affairs and other university and community constituencies.

As the key administrator responsible for this important work, the Associate Vice President/Dean of Students will bring energy, vision, diligence, and passion to these efforts. The Dean will be a motivational and inspiring leader, an adept listener, and a skilled change agent. Excellent professional instincts and judgment are crucial.

The Associate Vice President/Dean of Students will function as one of the University's primary advocates for students and the student experience. This role demonstrates integrity, credibility, confidentiality, and responsibility in all interactions. Acting as the face of Student Affairs & Services within the University and maintaining positive relations with the City of Flagstaff and the broader local community. An unflappable personal disposition and excellent crisis management skills are essential.

To achieve success in this position, the Associate Vice President/Dean of Students must be: a self-starter; an outstanding communicator; lead units in developing strategic plans that align with the Student Affairs and University strategic plans; informed by national trends and higher education best practices for the education of the whole student; deeply committed to continuing the University's fostering of a diverse and inclusive student community characterized by a culture of open, thoughtful, and respectful discourse and debate; able to innovate, inspire and lead multiple units; adept at budgetary management; able to make and effectively communicate difficult decisions; and, must deeply enjoy working with students.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Requires an advanced degree (Master’s, PhD, etc.) or the highest directly applicable professional certification,
  • 8+ years of relevant experience,
  • 5-7 years of supervisory experience, and
  • 4+ years leading across organizations, Or
  • A combination of related education, experience, and training.
