Bucknell University’s Department of Physics & Astronomy invites interested candidates to apply for a position as a Visiting Assistant Professor for the 2021-22 academic year, beginning in August 2021. A commitment to teaching excellence is essential, and the annual teaching load is six courses or their equivalent over two semesters. By the start date of the position, candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. or be ABD in physics, astronomy or a related field.

Bucknell University is a private, highly selective, unique national University where liberal arts and strong professional programs in engineering, business, education, and music complement each other. The Department of Physics & Astronomy is a fully undergraduate department with 14 tenured and tenure-track faculty with active research programs, and support provided by a lab coordinator, an administrative assistant, and machining/electronics staff. The department has a rich tradition of research with undergraduate students, with support for research including a machine shop, a linux cluster, and funds for travel to a conference. Typically, 10-15 physics majors graduate per year, and our introductory courses are taken by all students majoring in math and science disciplines, all of the students in the College of Engineering, and by students from all majors in a liberal arts environment.

The Community
Located in central Pennsylvania, Lewisburg features a variety of restaurants, beautiful Victorian homes, the restored art deco Campus Theatre (owned by the University), charming shops and boutiques, and the Barnes & Noble at Bucknell University Bookstore. About 33,000 residents live in the region.
The city of Williamsport is about a 30-minute drive from campus, and Penn State University’s main campus is about an hour away, as is Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s state capital. Bucknell is about three hours from New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
