The Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new structure at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation transformation. The Division brings together faculty, researchers, and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the research university for the digital age. Core to the Division is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity—and building the capacity to respond to these challenges. CDSS connects the Data Science Education Program, School of Information, Departments of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences and Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, and the Data Science Commons. The Division is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based data science education program, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year.
The Data/Finance Analyst independently applies skills and experience as a seasoned business and data analytics professional to projects of medium size at all levels of complexity, or to portions of large, multidimensional projects to resolve highly complex issues. The incumbent creates and maintains forecasting models for financial and student planning purposes, as well as prioritizes campus goals for diversifying the student body and assuring equity of experience, able to partner with analysts and leadership in Division of Equity & Inclusion. The individual will create research modalities including survey design and execution, automated processing of data from campus APIs, and diverse needs assessment across the Division. The Data/Finance Analyst creates easily consumed data visualizations for senior management audiences.

30% Performs complex and ad-hoc historical and predictive analysis and forecasting to provide information that supports organizational goals. Mines data in Oracle Campus Solutions and CalAnswers (Oracle BI) to quantify relationships and identify issues warranting further analysis. Areas of focus include financial commitments tracking and predictive growth, tracking classes in the major to show changes over time, working with the Office of the Registrar on enrollment statuses, how to best guide student choices, and other ways to improve the undergraduate student experience. Drives, from conceptualization to implementation, new processes of data acquisition and analysis for CDSS Leadership.
30% Conducts industry benchmarking analysis and develops quantitative business cases and policy proposals. Presents recommendations to senior management and other internal/external stakeholders. Develops and advocates solutions to Division- and campus-wide curricular issues, including identifying curricular pathways and easing curricular bottlenecks, maximizing access to key segments of the curriculum, to ensure student throughput (time to degree). Anticipates and engages in growth scenario planning. Utilizes data to make informed and supported recommendations to the Temporary Academic Support (TAS) budget submission process.
20% Conducts on-going collection and analyses of data sources and data sets. Identifies issues and collaborates on developing solutions to data management challenges. Designs and deploys staff and student surveys using Google Forms or Qualtrics, focus groups, qualitative interviews as needed. Evaluate implantation and impact of new Division rollouts.
10% Consults with Chief Financial Officer and other senior management (Associate Provost, Chief Administrative Officer, Associate Deans, Department Chairs, Data Science Governance Committee) to gather and clarify data and reporting needs for complex business intelligence solutions and analytics. Writes queries, develops report templates, and dashboards to be shared with other Division users. Guides and helps non-technical colleagues on defining metrics and pain points for further evaluation. Upward communication - presents and packages data to be communicated and shared across campus. Designs graphic representations to synthesize and communicate Division goals and vision.
10% Serves on internal committees and participates on cross-functional teams to solve Division process, service and equity and inclusion goals. Analyzes sensitive student demographic data to improve and retain underrepresented minorities in STEM. Part of Division team to tackle issues of transfer students, CEP advisors, admissions, scholarships and financial support, what is needed for the transition experience and transition support for the transfer population. Diagnostic support on community college and high school pathways of success.

- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Proven ability to serve as a technical resource providing advice and counsel on business intelligence issues.
- Thorough knowledge of relevant internal databases like CalAnswers and Campus Solutions or ability to learn, BI applications and tools. Ability to produce high-quality reports and documentation.
- Familiarity with Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) or ability to learn.
- Familiarity with APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) or ability to learn.
- Skills with analytic and automation programming languages such as Python, SQL, or similar and ability to learn new tools as required.
- Skills with data visualization software such as Tableau or similar and ability to learn new tools as required. Skills related to research design and statistical analysis.
