Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. Under the direction of the appropriate Dean of Instruction or administrator, the Instructional Designer will serve as the content expert for online/distance learning and training for the District with an emphasis on universal design and equity. The Instructional Designer will provide technical and pedagogical support and resources for faculty teaching online, while also providing information and training for online and hybrid course delivery, as well as comprehensive resources for ongoing faculty and staff development. This position requires extensive knowledge of the Learning Management System (Canvas), including LMS administration, working with faculty to build blueprint courses, understanding the integration of LMS add-ons and other software tools and training on these applications.

    General Description:
    This is a full-time, tenure track assignment under the general direction of the Area Dean. This position will be hired as a faculty member within a discipline and reassigned as an Instructional Designer/Faculty Coordinator. This reassignment will provide instructional design services for faculty to support the use of high-quality online and distance education instruction and Learning Management Systems. In addition to developing effective and engaging instructional resources such as video tutorials, webinars, and online and distance education courses, the Instructional Designer/Faculty Coordinator will work with faculty and staff to develop and implement learning resources. The Instructional Designer/Faculty Coordinator will also develop and implement training programs to promote understanding of technology-mediated learning for staff and students, as needed. In addition, the Instructional Designer/Faculty Coordinator will stay current with current pedagogical and technical trends in online and distance education to provide training and assistance to keep the district current with these technologies. The Instructional Designer/Faculty Coordinator, according to their expertise and discipline, may be assigned instructional load as part of their assignment.

    The Instructional Designer/Faculty Coordinator will teach a variety of Instructional Design courses and workshops, which may vary from semester to semester, and must be able to integrate the basic principles of instructional design into classroom, training/workshops, and collaborative projects with faculty, students, and staff. This position will also serve as the faculty coordinator of the newly established Educational Technology Training Center (ETTC), which provides one-on-one training, group training, instructional technology training, and online education technical assistance/training for employees and students. The Instructional Designer/Faculty Coordinator, under the supervision of the Dean of Instruction of Distance Education, will work directly with instructional faculty and others to assist with creating online and distance education courses that are dynamic, engaging, rigorous, and educational grounded in the latest pedagogy for online and distance education learning.

    Examples of Duties
    Essential Functions:

  • Develop and implement effective online and distance education courses in collaboration with discipline faculty
  • Serve as the faculty coordinator of the Educational Technology Training Center for the District
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff in the designing and development of course content including the integration of media technologies into traditional course content
  • Coordinate Educational Technology Training Center support services to faculty, students, and leadership
  • Assist in the development of course and blueprint templates for all departments/programs
  • Develop and deliver online and distance education training programs and workshops on course development and concepts of online and distance education course delivery
  • Create and publish user documentation, including web resources for supported technology tools and software
  • Assist with the implementation of various college, district, and statewide initiatives related to online and distance education programs
  • Assist faculty with understanding and complying with accessibility requirements for online courses, face to face courses, and related digital learning content
  • Maintain, train, and update best practices in area of instructional design
  • Participate in the evaluation, selection, testing and implementation of hardware and software tools, technologies and services that empower faculty and enhance teaching/learning experiences and student services
  • Provide related online education support by troubleshooting and resolving technology and system access issues
  • Participate in the preparation and composition of status reports for ongoing projects
  • Assist with grants and special programs, including proposals and applications, related to the enhancement of educational technology, distance education, and online instructional design
  • Engage in data inquiry and self-assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence, and equity
  • Provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum Participate in the development of teaching—learning methods and materials
  • Participate in departmental, area, and professional activities/committees
  • Participate in the College's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments


  • Typical Qualifications
    Required:
  • Master's degree in Instructional Design/Technology or Educational Technology
    OR
  • Master's degree in any discipline AND Extensive experience in instructional design, educational technology, and/or online learning development AND Current knowledge and experience in Instructional Design and related Learning Management Systems (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas)
  • OR
  • The equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience with online instruction and/or possession of online instruction certification
  • Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments
  • Must have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students

  • Preferred:
  • At least one year of experience working collaboratively with administration, faculty, and staff on the development of online courses
  • At least one year of experience with innovative teaching methods and curriculum development in a higher education setting
  • Experience working with instructors to produce instructional materials and leverage technology to support teaching and promote learning
  • Online teaching certifications
