Position Summary

The Division works proactively to address systemic inequities through professional learning, community building, advocacy, policy recommendations and organizational structures, while facilitating an integrated vision and shared responsibility for prioritizing and advancing institutional goals. This position, in collaboration with, and under the direction of, the Director of the Black Resource Center, provides support to the Black Resource Center. The Charles Bell Faculty Scholar is responsible for recruiting and supporting first-year African American students in the Henrietta Goodwin Scholars program; responsible for designing and developing creative, engaging and interactive curriculum that aligns with the goals, objectives, and learning outcomes for the seminar course; teaches the weekly seminar class; recruits, interviews, selects, trains and supervises academic coaches; organizes a weekly staff meeting for the coaches; meets with coaches a minimum of once per month to discuss progress or identify and mediate weaknesses; collaborate with the BRC leadership on programming; attend BRC events.

This position will/may be called upon as a resource in responding to sensitive equity, crisis and individualized issues as they relate to African and African American students. This position may serve as a mentor advisor to students and will work with interns and student assistants to design and deliver programs for graduate and/or undergraduate students, and University employees to promote leadership development, equity, multicultural education, social equality, and to address the intersectionality of identities such as gender, race, religion, ethnicity, class and ability. This position will promote the Black Resource Center and raise awareness of Black excellence and student concerns through supporting events/programs, written materials and through representation on campus wide committees.

This full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits-eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2022, with the possibility of ongoing reappointment. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

  • Candidates should possess a terminal degree i.e. PhD, EdD, MFA or JD

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience at the collegiate level
  • Prior experience in higher education.
  • Be collegial, with strong interpersonal skills, and a track record of working collaboratively with colleagues within and across disciplines.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training and education workshops.
  • Documented experience developing and coordinating programs and events.
  • Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross-cultural needs of Black students.
  • Ability to collaborate and work with other units regarding issues of diversity and community.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with key senior management, faculty, and administrators regarding issues that impact Black students.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to conversional, sensitive, and/or emotional issues and situations.
  • Ability to assess, design, implement and evaluate effective programming and policies as related to this position.
  • Ability to work well independently and follow through on projects with minimal direction.
  • Ability to effectively administer and coordinate a variety of concurrent and ongoing activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply power, privilege, and inequity concepts to create safe working environments for minoritized students, faculty, and staff.
  • Knowledge and experience working with diverse populations of Black students
  • Competency in cross-cultural communication.
  • Possesses leadership qualities such as: proactiveness, vision, being a self-starter, positivity and creativity.
  • Previous experience working with community engagement, community building and/or community organizing.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $5,779 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,779 – $10,814 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
