Associate Professor of the Practice, Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences

Tracking Code2560 Job Description

The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences invites applications for a non-tenure-track Associate Professor of the Practice position beginning as soon as May 1, 2021. Qualifications required of all applicants include extensive experience commensurate with a PhD degree or equivalent in any of the disciplines that span computing and data sciences and a strong commitment to teaching and to curricular development that is informed by contemporary, real-world experience in an academic or industrial setting.

Founded in 2019, the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) is a university-wide, degree-granting academic unit comprising scholars and researchers in core and applied areas of computing, computational, and data-driven inquiry. The Faculty will be housed in an iconic 19-story building with a convention-bending design inside and out at the heart of the BU Campus. Additional information about the Faculty is available at https://www.bu.edu/cds.

Starting in the fall of 2021, CDS will be launching its signature undergraduate BS degree program in Data Science. Successful candidates will play a major role in the roll out of this program, including development of course sequences that serve as gateways into the program, visioning and supporting experiential learning curricula that build towards students’ capstone experiences, as well as taking on leadership roles in advising, in mentorship, and in the development of the instructional infrastructure for CDS.

The successful candidate will carry out a workload equivalent to teaching five introductory or intermediate undergraduate courses covering foundational and core data science subjects, including programming and software engineering, data structures and algorithms, and the mathematical underpinnings of data mining and machine learning. Depending on the candidate’s qualifications, student advising and supervision of undergraduate capstone projects may substitute for teaching assignments.

Particular attention will be given to candidates with a record of pedagogical innovation in undergraduate education in topics that are relevant to data science, including software engineering; computational statistics; data engineering, management, and mining; machine learning; and AI.

Boston University expects excellence in teaching and in research and is committed to building a culturally, racially, and ethnically diverse scholarly community, which is essential to its mission as expressed at https://www.bu.edu/info/about/diversity. BU is an AAU institution with a rich tradition of inclusion and social justice. We are proud of our record, including being the first American university to award a PhD to a woman and the university from which Martin Luther King Jr. received his PhD. We are dedicated to increasing participation of all talented students, especially women and other underrepresented groups in Computing and Data Sciences.

DO NOT APPLY THROUGH THE BOSTON UNIVERSITY HR WEBSITE.

The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
