Position Summary: The Dean of Student Experience is the administrative lead responsible for creating an engaged and vibrant student life and campus experience and will collaborate with other offices and stakeholders to support student success. This position will oversee the Housing, Residence Life and programming positions, and facilitate a student living experience at Coe commensurate to that of the level of breadth, depth and excellence found in our academic programs. The Dean of Student Experience is the coordinator of the Student Experience Team, and will collaborate with the leaders of Residence Life, Health and Wellness, Conduct and Civility, and Access and Success, to create a best-in-class cocurricular culture from the point of enrollment through graduation. Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Oversee Housing and Residence Life in partnership with the Associate Dean of Student Engagement, in managing the residence halls, apartments, and houses which include a residential population of approximately 1200 students during the academic year. This includes supervision and management of the summer housing program for students choosing to reside on campus and guests recruited through conferences and events.
  • Direct student programming in the residence halls and through campus activities in collaboration with full time staff. Attend student events regularly, fostering and building relationships between the college and students, helping to develop a positive and resilient campus community for all Coe students from enrollment to graduation.
  • Oversee student organizations including student senate and Greek life
    • Serve as the primary advisor to the Student Senate and student leadership of the same, and aid in the planning and implementation of such programs.
  • Collaborate with recruitment and other staff across campus to create a seamless student transition from matriculation to active and supported first year Kohawk.
  • Represent Student Life to external and internal stakeholders through roles as assigned.
  • Manage and support four to six full-time professional staff.
  • Collaborate with the leaders of Health and Wellness and Conduct/Civility to restructure crisis management in a way that includes ample on call staffing and crisis management support in a sustainable way for professional staff.
  • Ensure timely compliance with policies and reporting that connect with areas of oversight.
  • Foster the development of a campus community that values and supports diverse people, thoughts, and viewpoints, and develop initiatives to enhance genuine inclusion.
  • Serve as a core leader in the college’s mission-driven commitment to inclusive practices and preparing students to live in a diverse world.
  • Lead and develop a highly effective team of people who make successful and lasting contributions to the college’s mission and strategic plan, including leading the college to further promote student centered approaches in all our policies and practices.
  • Maintain effective relationships with other student affair professionals, senior level administration and faculty/staff leadership. Function as interface between the student life office and other campus areas.
Qualifications:
  • Baccalaureate Degree required, with a master’s or professional degree preferred
  • 5-7 years student services experience or equivalent field desired with progressively responsible leadership preferred.
  • Successful completion of a driver and background check in accordance with Coe College policy.
  • Ability to attend weekend and evening commitments regularly.

    Organization

     

    Coe College is a national, residential liberal arts college offering a broad array of programs in the arts, sciences and professions. The campus encompasses nearly 70 acres in the heart of Iowa’s second largest city, Cedar Rapids, and is adjacent to the MedQuarter Regional Medical District. 

    A member of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM), Coe enrolls 1,400 students and has approximately 415 full- and part-time employees. This includes nearly 90 full-time faculty members and 180 full-time staff members. The nine largest incoming classes in the college’s history have all come in the last nine years, with the most recent class totalling 436 students from 27 states and six countries.

    The college offers over 60 areas of study with a 4-4-1 academic calendar including an optional May Term. Nearly all students live on campus all four years, and 90% of students are involved in one or more co-curricular activities. 

    Producing 32 Fulbright Scholars in the last eight years, Coe has been named a top producer of U.S. Fulbright students when compared nationally with all colleges and universities. The college provides a highly personalized approach to education with an average class size of 16 students and a student faculty ratio of 11:1. Coe is ranked among the top 20% of all colleges and universities (according to U.S. News & World Report), and hosts a Phi Beta Kappa chapter.

    Coe’s nearly 70-acre campus includes 40 buildings and serves as an urban field station creating opportunities for students and faculty to research and study interaction of the city with the campus environment. An extension of campus includes Coe’s Wilderness Field Station, which is situated on 120 acres of land in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota. 

    Recent capital improvement projects exceeding $40 million in investments include the renovation and expansion of Coe’s athletic facilities, renovation of Hickok Hall, an addition to and renovation of Peterson Hall of Science and renovation of Stewart Memorial Library to create the Learning Commons. 

    For the past decade, nearly 100% of Coe graduates have been employed, in grad school, or engaging in public service within nine months of graduation. Our location in Cedar Rapids means students have access to an extensive network of employment, internship, research and networking opportunities.
