Position Description:
POSITION SUMMARY

This faculty position is a full-time 100% FTE (11 months, July - May), grant funded, non-tenured, categorical position within a federally-funded program under the Title V: Hispanic-Serving as Counselor of Puente and HSI Initiatives in the Division of Counseling and Matriculation located at San Jose City College. 50 percent of funding will be through Puente and 50 Percent will be through HSI grant funds.

The grant period is from 10/01/2020 to 9/30/2025. Continuation is contingent upon annual funding.

This position is housed in the METAS Office and reports to the Dean of Counseling with liaison responsibilities to the Title V: HSI Grant which aims to support Latinx students in their educational trajectories. The successful candidate will use a combination of tutoring, mentoring, research skills instruction, transfer advising and, perhaps most important, participation in undergraduate research experiences to encourage self-efficacy, skill development and motivation to complete their bachelor degrees on-time and with highly honed set of analytical and writing skills.

The HSI grant is one of several components of the Metas Program, which coordinates instructional and student support services in collaboration with other programs and departments across campus to increase retention, successful course completion, and persistence towards completion of a certificate, associate degrees, or transfer requirements with a range of services that include: Summer Bridge, First Year Experience, Supplemental Instruction, Peer-Led Team Learning, Parent College, and other programs that pertains to student success.

Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities. Some workdays may be assigned outside the eleven-month academic calendar.

This position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.

2. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.

3. Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.

4. Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others.

5. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district.

6. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours.

7. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.

8. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.

9. Foster a professional work and learning environment.

10. Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

11. Provide academic, vocational, career and personal guidance and counseling for prospective, new and continuing student who are part of Puente and those under the HSI Grant.

12. Recruit Puente mentors and match mentors to students.

13. Act as liaison counselor to one or more academic disciplines, Counseling Department, and the Metas Program.

14. Participate in program planning, regular meetings with instructional faculty and staff, and program evaluation of activities.

15. Assist in the planning and implementation of summer bridge.

16. Assist with development, planning, and implementation of Undergraduate Research Program.

17. Contribute to planning, organizing, coordinating and implementing transfer activities such as Transfer Day, visits from university representatives, workshops associated with the university admissions process, visits/field trips to four-year institutions and/or other events associated with transfer process.

18. Support student with Concurrent Enrollment and Cross Registration at four-year universities.

19. Collaborate with instructional faculty across disciplines in designing curriculum and support activities to increase retention and success among transfer students and students participating in HSI led initiatives.

20. Participate in outreach functions that may include serving as a liaison with high schools, mentors, community-based organizations and four-year colleges/universities.


Required Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. Master’s in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development, Marriage and Family Therapy or Marriage, Family and Child Counseling,

(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline).

Desired Qualifications:
1. Experience in counseling students in PUENTE.
2. Experience in working under the parameters of an HSI grant.
3. A background in working with students in STEM.
4. Experience in dealing with students facing probation and or dismissal.
5. Bilingual abilities, desirable.

    Salary Range:
    $82,366 to $113,065 Entry Level Annual Salary (Academic Salary Schedule 2019-2020); Maximum Salary Potential $146,699. Note: Actual Salary placement is based on candidate's verified education and experience.
