In cooperation with the Director of Community and Regional Affairs, the Associate Director for Community Relations develops and carries out strategies for effectively representing the University’s interests in the community, especially outside of governmental and regulatory venues, and for fostering mutual understanding and positive interactions between the University and the community.

The Associate Director is responsible for identifying community issues and organizations to which Princeton should direct time and resources.

The Associate Director works with others on campus to create and carry out a coherent, broad-gauged and long-term strategy through which Princeton University can be a connected, committed and contributing member of the community and enhance its quality of life.


The Associate Director identifies and provides meaningful ways for the community and Princeton University to interact, maintaining relationships with leaders of key community organizations and agencies, and working with other offices at Princeton to foster good relationships. The associate director also:

- Develops tools, strategies, methods and incentives that encourage members of the University community to be good neighbors and active participants in community life.

- Forges strong links between the University and local schools, businesses and non-governmental organizations.

- Provides timely information to community members and organizations about the University.

The Associate Director organizes annual and one-time events that are sponsored or supported by the Office of Community and Regional Affairs for members of the community and serves as liaison to community events sponsored by other offices at the University. The Associate Director also:

- Develops tools, strategies, methods and incentives that encourage members of the community to be aware of the opportunities provided to them by the University and to be active participants in University programs and activities available to them.

- Working with the Director of Conference and Event Services and other offices as needed, sets guidelines and makes decisions on community use of facilities, on-campus fund-raising events by community organizations and other requests by local organizations in keeping with the University’s mission and community relations goals.

The Associate Director works with other organizations on campus including the PACE Center for Civic Engagement, the Student Volunteer Council, Community House, the Department of Athletics and others to develop and implement community outreach and service opportunities.

The Associate Director oversees Princeton University’s Community Auditing and Continuing Education programs and handles miscellaneous duties including:

- Interacting with county election officials and municipal clerks to coordinate campus-based polling locations.

- Attending community events as needed.

- Representing Princeton University on community boards and organizations.

- Carrying out other duties as assigned by the Director of Community and Regional Affairs.


Essential Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

- Five or more years of work experience.

- Deep familiarity with the Princeton community and knowledge about the three other communities, and the two counties, in which the University resides.
- Excellent organizational skills, detail oriented, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced environment.
- Ability to communicate clearly in public settings and in writing.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Experience with conference/event planning and operation.
- Ability to interact with all levels of the University and local community with tact, patience, and professionalism.-

- Ability to be proactive and demonstrate initiative; ability to work independently and exercise discretion.
- Flexibility; resourcefulness; adaptability to changing needs and demands; willingness to work long hours and on weekends/evenings as circumstances require.

Preferred Qualifications

- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and social media.
