The undergraduate International Relations (IR) Program of the University of Pennsylvania is searching for a full-time Lecturer in International Relations for Academic Year 2021–22. The IR Program is a multi-disciplinary major in the College of Arts and Sciences that serves approximately 150 students.  Its primary missions are to instruct, advise, and promote the career development of its students. Most of its curriculum consists of courses offered by affiliated or related departments across campus, especially Political Science, History, and Economics.

The IR staff itself is responsible for a year-long seminar sequence (INTR390/391) in which every senior in the program completes an original thesis; a course on research methods and practice in international relations (INTR350); and an introductory level course on International Relations Theory and History (INTR101).  When enrollments permit, however, we encourage Lecturers to offer a course in their own expertise, and they may have the opportunity to offer such courses as overload or summer courses in the College of Liberal and Professional Studies.

This appointment is for one year, and is renewable annually for up to an additional two years upon satisfactory performance and approval of the Dean. Candidates should have a completed doctorate in diplomatic or international history, or related field (e.g. area studies).  The primary responsibility of the successful candidate is to instruct two sections each semester of the senior seminar sequence (INTR390/391), supervising approximately 15 senior theses in each section (30 total) over the course of the year.

Lecturers are also expected to assist in general advising of IR majors for two–three hours per week in addition to office hours associated with their courses. All IR staff members are encouraged to participate occasionally in extracurricular activities sponsored by the IR Program.
