The Associate Dean of Research at the Boston University (BU) School of Medicine is excited to announce a new faculty position to start in Summer or Fall 2021 to lead innovative data science scholarship and work collaboratively with School of Medicine faculty from various biomedical disciplines, and to teach and mentor students, with the possibility of a secondary appointment with the Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences for qualified and interested candidates.

Position Qualifications.

Successful applicants at any faculty rank will direct the Biomedical Data Science Core, actively engage in both methodological and collaborative research; participate in teaching and mentoring students in the School’s MD, MS, and PhD programs and provide service to the school, university, and profession. This creative faculty member will:

• hire, develop and manage a dedicated staff for the Applied Biomedical Data Science Core within the Boston University School of Medicine Data Science Initiative, with expertise in data science, big data analytics, machine learning, or related disciplines.
• work with investigators from a wide variety of biomedical disciplines (genomics, proteomics, large cohorts, etc) to incorporate bioinformatics and data science approaches into their research.
• write relevant sections of grant applications as key personnel with other investigators to obtain funding for projects and of manuscripts for publication.
• develop and deliver training workshops and develop course in biomedical data science and related topics contributing to the medical education program.
• develop innovative methods to support biological and medical research, and pursue their own research projects.

The successful applicant must have a biomedical mindset, and:

• Significant expertise in data science methods, high throughput sequence analysis, programming in bash, python, and R, and use of high-performance compute cluster technologies.
• A PhD in an applicable field, such as Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Applied Statistics, Biology, Biochemistry, etc, or equivalent experience.
• Excellent communication and management skills with the ability to work independently on multiple complex projects simultaneously are critical.
• Demonstrated research record, a strong commitment to teaching.

The School of Medicine is internationally recognized for their innovation in research and scholarship in a diverse range of areas of data science including genetics and gemomics, clinical trials, surveillance, longitudinal studies, and risk prediction. Medical School faculty are the principal investigators of several large clinical trials and observational studies such as the renowned Framingham Heart Study, and the Black Women's Health Study. Their work has contributed new knowledge in the fields of cardiovascular disease, dementia and Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis and arthritis, nutrition, healthy aging and extreme longevity. Many of these findings have been effectively translated into current clinical practice.
