English faculty are involved professional development activities, regularly attending, and presenting at national and regional conferences and workshops. Our faculty teach a range of face-to-face, online, hybrid and/or blended and hy-flex classes using a variety of materials, including Open Educational Resources (OERs). Using both synchronous and asynchronous modes of instructional delivery, our faculty focus on student engagement and success through critical thinking, and employing analytical and hands-on approaches. CSM faculty are expected to be knowledgeable about learning management systems in addition to face-to-face and innovative technology-based instructional delivery approaches. As such, we are seeking an innovative educator to join our English faculty. English faculty teach a variety of courses, including Developmental Integrated Reading and Writing, Composition and Rhetoric, Composition and Literature, Business and Technical Writing, and the successful candidate will have a strong background in a range of courses.The College of Southern Maryland is an ardent supporter of professional development and offers a healthy professional development program for and investment in its faculty.
Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe faculty member is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning. The faculty member is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on the campus(es) or center to which the faculty member is assigned. At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, holding office hours, serving on various committees, and participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations. A faculty member performs all other duties as directed by the Division Chair, Vice President of Academic Affairs, or the President or designee.The faculty member will teach 15 credits per semester: 30 credits per 10-month contract period. The faculty member will schedule, publish, and hold 5 office hours per week during the academic year, including fall and spring semesters. The faculty member must be willing to teach on multiple campuses. The faculty member will participate in professional development opportunities and perform professional service hours based on faculty placement in rank, as set forth in the Faculty Handbook. Primary areas of teaching responsibility include: Teaching developmental and first-year composition courses at the community-college level. The faculty member will work closely with coordinator of English to determine schedule, class assignments, and will contribute to curriculum and assessment activities.In addition to the above responsibilities, the faculty member may be asked to help teach and design accelerated writing courses (such as ENG 1010T) and co-requisite remediation programs. Preference will be given to candidates with coursework and/or experience in accelerated developmental English pedagogy. This position is assigned to the La Plata campus. M.A. in English, English Education, or closely related field requiredPh.D. in English or closely related field. Preferred.At least two years of college-level teaching experience, preferably at the community college level.Ability to use word processing, basic internet applications, and basic database navigation.Ability to use an education enterprise, learning management system such as D2L Brightspace to support and facilitate instructional delivery.Ability to teach in face-to-face, virtual, web, and web-hybrid formats.Experience developing or using Open Educational Resource (OER) materials as an instructional tool preferred.Support and promote the college and discipline missions centered on excellence in teaching and learning through quality instruction, curriculum enhancement, and service.Experience with program evaluation and curricular development preferred Minimum Qualifications and Standards RequiredAdditional Information:
