General Summary

Position: Behavioral and Health Sciences Librarian, a tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Appointment Description:
• Tenure-track faculty position with an expected start date of September, 2021.
• This position is an 8-month academic year appointment, with an additional Summer appointment possible.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

As a member of the Library faculty, the Behavioral and Health Sciences Librarian serves as the liaison to the Psychology Department, related behavioral sciences, interdisciplinary fields such as neuroscience, and selected fields in the health sciences to be determined based on the successful candidate's expertise and interests, and the institution's needs.

The Behavioral and Health Sciences Librarian enhances information and data literacy by collaborating with faculty in liaison areas to develop, promote, and teach course-integrated library instruction; creating online research guides and tutorials; assessing learning outcomes; providing reference assistance; conducting research consultations; promoting library services; and developing other approaches to synchronous and asynchronous instruction. The librarian will provide leadership for data services and other emerging trends in scholarly communication and research in the relevant subject areas.

The librarian participates in collection decisions andoversees the development of the specialized behavioral and health sciences collections and information resources, using knowledge from interactions with disciplinary faculty to inform collection decisions.

As a member of the Information Services team, the Librarian also provides research assistance to all library users (both in-person and online), collaborates on Information Services team projects, and works to continuously enhance the user experience.

The Librarian may perform related Departmental duties as required.

Beyond these primary assignments, scholarly and/or creative activity and department, university, and professional service are required for tenure and promotion.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between EMU and the EMU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Qualifications

  • ALA accredited Masters degree in library or information science, or equivalent
  • Experience searching relevant behavioral and health sciences databases
  • Experience teaching information literacy skills
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Evidence of both professional initiative and flexibility
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and contribute to a diverse university community
  • Experience creating instructional materials
  • Understanding of current collection development practices

Preferred:
  • Degree or coursework in a relevant discipline
  • Experience providing reference and/or instruction in relevant disciplines
  • Experience providing in-person or online reference service
  • Experience with data management, locating data sources, and/or statistical analysis
  • Knowledge of learning assessment strategies and current information literacy concepts
