The Pathology Department has an exciting opportunity for a Director, Laboratory Services. The Director, Laboratory Services directs and manages the overall operation, leadership, direction, and administration of the clinical laboratory, in accordance with relevant state and federal regulations. The incumbent also oversees the overall operation and administration of the assigned laboratory, including the employment of personnel that is competent in performing test procedures, and recording and reporting test results in a prompt, accurate, and proficient manner.

  • Core job function will also include ensuring Blood Bank and Transfusion policies and SOPs are in compliance with relevant rules and regulations such as the FDA, CLIA, state testing requirements, Joint Commission, etc., managing FDA reportable events, lookback, errors and deviations, performing self-inspection, and auditing, educating clinical team on blood safety, reviewing and investigating major transfusion events, such as MTPs, and major transfusion related safety issues such as wrong blood in tubes and blood delays, serving as a liaison between the transfusion services and the clinical services, and performing other regulatory or QA/QI tasks assigned by the transfusion service management team.
  • Maintains quality metrics records up to date.
  • Meets with QA Medical Director for final assessment of quality data, outliers and corrective actions.
  • Provides updates to the Transfusion Committee, Blood Bank and Laboratory department meetings, Nursing leadership councils and Quality related committees on issues related to blood management and transfusion safety.
  • Monitors Transfusion Medicine product utilization and brings utilization issues to the attention of the Medical Director(s) of the Transfusion Service, Transfusion Committee and Blood Management Program.
  • Analyzes data, generates graphs of quality indicators, conducts investigations and prepares corrective action plans for presentation to the faculty.
  • Assists Blood Bank Supervisor to resolve any problems and/or critical tests/test results according to established protocol in a timely manner.
  • Participates in process optimization projects focused on improved quality outcomes.
  • Helps maintain Licensing and accreditation, activity menu and proficiency testing up to date.
  • Helps prepare responses to citations and/ or accreditation inquiries.
  • Monitors Incident reports, complaints and their resolutions.
  • Helps maintain up to date departmental policies and procedures.
  • Reports and Participates in hospital-wide performance improvement and quality activities.
  • Analyzes and monitors Clinical Pathology and Anatomical Pathology quality metrics and reports them to the Medical Director.
  • Participates actively on ongoing and new performance improvement projects.
  • Assist on investigations, root cause analyses and complaint resolutions
  • Other duties assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

Minimum 7 years of relevant experience

  • Knowledge of business and management principles.
  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
  • Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop and train others.
  • Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
