Associate Dean and Chief Housing Officer

About the Department:
Housing and Residence Life (HRL) is a self-supporting auxiliary organization within the University Life division of George Mason University. HRL serves a highly diverse population of approximately 6,200 students, the majority of which are undergraduates living in traditional, suite, and apartment-style residence halls at three campuses within the vibrant Northern Virginia area. HRL employs approximately 150 full-time graduate staff members and over 300 undergraduate student staff members. HRL is committed to providing a safe, well-maintained, student-centered environment that is innovative, fosters well-being, inclusivity, and aligned with University Life divisional strategic priorities. HRL serves a critical role in meeting the institution and division’s mission.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for University Life, the Associate Dean/Chief Housing Officer (CHO) is responsible for providing vision, leadership, and direction for a comprehensive Housing and Residence Life program that currently serves nearly 6,200 residential students. The Associate Dean/Chief Housing Officer is responsible for a $51 million budget and the oversight of 150 full-time staff and over 300 student staff members. The Associate Dean/Chief Housing Officer is responsible for establishing and implementing short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures, monitoring and evaluating programmatic and operational effectiveness, and enacting changes required for continuous improvement. The Associate Dean/Chief Housing Officer must be a visionary and highly collaborative leader with the ability to facilitate organizational change to adapt to the changing needs of students. The Associate Dean/Chief Housing Officer will also be innovative, possess a passion for the student experience, and is responsible for all crisis management protocols and decisions.
The Associate Dean and Chief Housing Officer leads the charge and fosters collaborative partnerships with faculty, staff and other university constituencies ensuring best practices in residence life, housing services, and efforts that support the academic mission of the university. The Associate Dean and Chief Housing Officer provides innovative leadership for ongoing critical Housing and Residence Life development, management, and stewardship priorities. This includes:
- Projecting occupancy and overseeing the occupancy plan to achieve maximum results;
- Maintaining a culture and essential practices that put student safety and security first;
- Providing leadership support for expansion and continuous improvement efforts of Living Learning Communities;
- Planning for appropriate maintenance and replacement of existing structures, and engaging in planning for new construction as needed.
The Associate Dean and Chief Housing Officer must be able to explore creative strategies for potential housing expansion options which may include public-private partnerships, and master-leasing.
The Associate Dean and Chief Housing Officer is a highly visible leader, collaborating and sharing information with a broad group of internal and external stakeholders, and serving as an effective ambassador for the George Mason community.
The Associate Dean and Chief Housing Officer will provide leadership for an innovative and comprehensive residence life program that elevates engagement, and fosters well-being and inclusivity.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education administration, business or related field;
- At least fifteen years of progressively significant supervisory experience in college/university housing;
- Demonstrated evidence of strong leadership, organizational, decision making, financial management, personnel management, and strategy development skills;
- Ability to operate autonomously;
- Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships with diverse populations;
- Effectively communicate with others required;
- Innovation, adaptability and flexibility are a must;
- On-call, evening, weekend, and holiday work necessary.
