Position SummaryThe College of Southern Maryland is located 45 minutes from the Nation’s Capital, nestled in the history-rich community of southern Maryland. Our Librarians actively support Information Literacy initiatives with instructional time focused on encouraging the location and use of college-level resources.

CSM Librarians work closely with students inside our libraries, in the classroom, and online to promote student success. Librarians teach a range of face-to-face and online classes often using Open Educational Resources (OERs). Using both synchronous and asynchronous modes of instructional delivery, our Librarians focus on student engagement and success through critical thinking, analytical and hands-on approaches. Librarians are expected to be knowledgeable of subscription research databases, learning management systems, and to face-to-face and innovative technology-based instructional delivery approaches.

Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Reference/Instructional Librarian provides reference services and information literacy instruction in a variety of formats. This is a professional faculty (non-tenure) level position requiring a Master's Degree in Library Science. The position works independently and collaboratively to develop, deliver, and support instruction. This position also requires knowledge of best practices currently used in the field of library science. This position will be primarily at the La Plata campus; however, travel to the other campuses will be required as needed.

DUTIES AND STANDARDS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Works collaboratively with supervisor, other librarians, and faculty to develop, deliver, information literacy instructionDevelops Information Literacy instruction in accordance with Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) standards in the classroom, the online environment, and through faculty partnerships Engages faculty and other teaching staff to integrate information literacy concepts and skills into the curriculumHelps develop programmatic assessment models that measure the impact of library instruction on student learning Provides high quality reference and research support on demand, by appointment, email, chat, or other venuePrepares online and print research guides to augment instruction and to assist faculty and student researchersCollaborates on the development of a dynamic online service environment to engage users with library collections and servicesExtends services through embedded librarianship and support of undergraduate researchersDemonstrates ability to communicate orally and in writingDemonstrates ability to read and interpret informationDemonstrates ability to deliver instruction to diverse student populations, with varied levels of learning and preparation Demonstrates experience providing feedback students can use to improve their performanceMaintains an ongoing program of professional development and participate in professional organizations, workshops, seminars, conferences, and activitiesAssist with daily library servicesDemonstrates mastery of appropriate computer operation skillsOperate a motor vehicle for travel to other campuses Minimum Education and TrainingMaster's Degree in Library Science (MLS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited Institution of Higher EducationExperience delivering information literacy instructionAbility to teach in face-to-face and virtual formats
  • Experience creating Lib Guides™ or similar research support materials
  • Ability to use word processing, basic internet applications, and basic database navigation
