Job Overview

The Director of Foundation Relations serves as an advancement leader and integral member of the Development Leadership Team. 

Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Development and managing a team of three, the Director has a primary goal of increasing support from local, regional, and national private foundations.  Working closely with university and academic leadership in collaboration with the Research Development team in the Office of Research, the Director and Foundation Relations team seek to identify new funding opportunities from private grant makers through the expansion of existing relationships and by building new ones.  The team surveys the private foundation landscape in search of funders whose goals align with UCSC's priorities and helps to catalyst those funding opportunities. 

The Director will project the confidence and possess the needed set of experiences to be a campus thought-partner on private foundation philanthropy and bring together campus partners around initiatives to help yield effective ideas and proposals.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
Salary Information: Minimum Starting Salary: $130,000/annually. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Duties
75% - Fundraising
  • Maintain a dynamic portfolio of key foundation contacts and secure new levels of institutional support through gifts and grants.
  • Work closely with the Research Development team in the Office of Research to ensure cross campus coordination and flow of information related to funding opportunities from private foundations.
  • Partner with colleagues in Stewardship to assure timely and accurate reporting of gift/grant usage and impact to foundation funders.
  • Aartner with colleagues in Stewardship to implement meaningful recognition of new and long-term foundation partners.
  • Draft high-quality proposals, grant requests, letters, emails, and other fundraising communications to support best practice foundation engagement.

15% - Management
  • Develop and execute an annual operating plan with accountable monthly and quarterly monetary and activity goals.
  • Meet or exceed agreed upon departmental metrics and provide timely measurement reports.
  • Collaborate with campus colleagues and the Foundation Relations team to incorporate process improvements.
  • Inspire, train, and motivate the Foundation Relations team.

10% - Strategy
  • Serve as a member of the Development Leadership Team, helping to develop and implement annual fundraising and campaign plans to meet university priorities.
  • Understand divisional and university priorities; align the team's activities to meet campus priorities.
  • Coordinate and strategize key prospect partnerships with the Office of Research.
  • Identify new foundation prospects and grow the base of support.
  • Work with university leadership to identify funding priorities and build related cases for support targeted to foundation support.

Required Qualifications
  • Excellent knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations including advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
  • The successful candidate will document successful solicitation of numerous foundation grants and gifts, and will present a history of building an advancement and/or foundation relations program and advancing fund raising performance.
  • Excellent leadership / management skills to select, train, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff.
  • Five to seven years with progressively responsible fund raising and/or alumni and volunteer relations management is desired, preferably in a development office setting.
  • Substantive national foundation relations experience is preferred. Persons with high-level experience in sponsored research procurement and management may also be considered.
  • The capability to work effectively with sophisticated foundation leaders is essential.
  • Higher education or equivalent non-profit fundraising experience is helpful, and large, research University fundraising experience will be valued.
  • Candidates should display a proven track record of soliciting and closing foundation grants, gifts, and sponsorships in the six- and seven-figure range.
  • The ability to work effectively leading a team and with many diverse constituencies in a university environment should be evident.
  • Other important characteristics include a strong work ethic, competitive nature, personal integrity, emotional intelligence, a sense of humor, excellent communication and organizational skills, strategic thinking and planning skills, and a commitment to the mission and values of UC Santa Cruz.
  • Evidence of a commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth is also valued.
  • The successful candidate will preferably display a record of gift and grant acquisition success and team management.
  • Self-starter who has a demonstrable track record of advancement leadership, preferably with strong experience in foundation relations.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to affect favorably sophisticated business/foundation leaders, volunteers and donors.
