Job Summary/Description:

University Theatre Costumer reads each play script produced, researches period of show and develops costume designs accordingly. Patterns are made or purchased, actor measured and fitted, fabrics and notions purchased, and shops for costumes and accessories. Costumer attends production meetings and works with entire design staff, build costumes, attends rehearsals and sees to laundering of costumes.

Typical Duties/Job Duties:

Additional duties include maintaining storage, renting costumes, handling of petty cash, reordering and maintaining of tools and equipment

1. Maintains and organizes the Costume Shop, the tools, materials, equipment and storage of costumes
2. Builds, purchases or finds appropriate costumes for plays and musicals
3. Maintains budget and expenses for purchasing costumes, fabrics, notions, equipment, etc. for costuming efforts for each production
4. Supervises, MENTORS and teaches students costume techniques and processes of costuming and design
5. Researches, sketches and designs costumes for shows using appropriate fabric, style and draping for characters
6. Makes or uses patterns for costume builds
7. Ability to cut, stitch and sew
8. Heads cleaning of costumes
9. Works collaboratively with faculty, staff and students on play and musical productions
10. Mentor and supervise undergraduate practicum students
11. Assists with other duties as assigned by the Director of Theatre

10. artistic skills and knowledge of principles and elements of art

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent
Experience in theatre costuming

Preferred Qualifications:

Associate’s or baccalaureate degree
