University Information:

UNC Greensboro, located in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, is 1 of only 57 doctoral institutions recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for both higher research activity and community engagement. Founded in 1891 and one of the original three UNC System institutions, UNC Greensboro is one of the most diverse universities in the state with 20,000+ students, and 3,000+ faculty and staff members representing 90+ nationalities. With 17 Division I athletic teams, 85 undergraduate degrees in over 125 areas of study, as well as 74 master’s and 32 doctoral programs, UNC Greensboro is consistently recognized nationally among the top universities for academic excellence and value, with noted strengths in health and wellness, visual and performing arts, nursing, education, and more. For additional information, please visit uncg.edu and follow UNCG on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

UNCG embraces its status as an R2 institution and at the same time is fiercely passionate about student access, diversity, and community engagement. The University has a growing profile as a national leader
in outcomes for students from rural, low-income, and under-represented minority backgrounds; the U.S. Department of Education has recently cited the institution for “excelling in access and success” with Pelleligible students. The University is among a very small number of research institutions in the US that have closed the race/ethnicity-based graduation gap. UNCG is known for its inclusive learning community with a campus-wide culture that embodies access, equity, diversity, excellence, and collaboration; and for its long track record of changing the trajectory of students’ lives.

The academic enterprise is the heart of the University and the Division of Academic Affairs is central to implementing the academic mission of UNCG. The University offers 82 undergraduate programs in over 100 areas of study, 74 master’s programs, and 32 doctoral programs. UNCG’s academic schools and programs include the College of Arts and Sciences; the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics; the School of Education; the School of Health and Human Sciences; the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering; the College of Visual and Performing Arts; the School of Nursing; the Graduate School; the Warren Ashby, Ione Grogan, and Cornelia Strong Residential Colleges; and the Lloyd International
Honors College. The student-to-faculty ratio is about 20:1.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chancellor, the Provost will serve as a champion of UNCG’s faculty, demonstrating a leadership style that is transparent and engaged. This individual will possess the knowledge and experience to develop successful strategies that strengthen academic programs, their delivery, and their impact. The Provost has 20 direct reports and oversees Academic Affairs (which includes the divisions of Student Affairs, Research and Engagement, and Student Success) with a total budget of more than $394 million (FY20-21). The successful candidate will be resourceful, imaginative, and forward-thinking, with a record of collaborative academic and administrative oversight. An earned doctorate or other terminal degree is required, as is a record of scholarship and teaching commensurate with appointment to the rank of full professor.

Minimum Qualifications:

While no one candidate will embody every quality, the successful candidate will bring many, if not all of, the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines represented in the University;
  • Teaching, scholarly, research/creative activity, and service credentials meriting appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure;

Key Responsibility:

Reporting to the Chancellor

Essential Tasks:

Reporting to the Chancellor, the Provost serves as the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and is the University’s Chief Academic Officer, working with the Chancellor, deans, faculty, staff, and students to provide vision, leadership, and overall management and direction for the Division of Academic Affairs. The Provost currently has 20 direct reports: the deans for the nine schools and colleges (College of Arts & Sciences, Bryan School of Business & Economics, School of Education, College of Visual & Performing Arts, the Graduate School, School of Health & Human Services, School of Nursing, the Joint School of
Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, and the Lloyd International Honors College). Other direct reports include the Senior Vice Provost, the Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement, the Vice Chancellor
for Student Affairs, the Associate Provost for International Programs, the Associate Vice Provost for Student Success and Dean of Undergraduate Studies, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs,
Technology, and Innovation, the Dean of UNCG Online, the Dean of University Libraries, the Director of the Weatherspoon Art Museum, and the Assistant to the Provost. In the continuity of administration, the Provost functions as the second in command.

Key Responsibility:

Finance and Budget

Essential Tasks:

The Provost is responsible for overseeing the budget development process for the Office of Academic Affairs and its budget of more than $380 million (FY20-21). The State of North Carolina is shifting from forward-funding its universities to funding in arrears beginning in FY20-21, meaning new resources will be provided after the forthcoming year has concluded and enrollment data are confirmed.

Key Responsibility:

Provide visionary leadership for the academic enterprise

Essential Tasks:

Working closely with other academic leaders, the next Provost must lead the academic enterprise through collaboration and by empowering deans and department heads. The Provost will enable the success of faculty and staff, ensuring they are heard by and remain partners with the University’s administration. UNCG has a reputation for stellar teaching and research, and the Provost will work closely with deans and department heads to promote innovative pedagogy, world-class scholarship, and institutional service. The Provost will also lead the implementation of a new General Education program and ensure that new academic initiatives are on the cusp of innovation in teaching and research. This includes providing executive oversight and strategic planning for the accreditation and re-accreditation of key programs. The next Provost will need to grapple with and grasp the new financial realities of public higher education, especially in a time of declining enrollments of students who come directly from high school and increasing enrollments of community college transfer students. The Provost will oversee the budget for academic initiatives with competing demands and will need to balance needs within the state funding cycle. To be successful in these efforts, the next Provost will need to have a sophisticated knowledge of budgeting and establish trust across the institution, build bridges among academic divisions by serving as a reliable conduit for information among institutional leaders, and promote communication and direction among faculty, staff, and students.

Key Responsibility:

Recruit, develop, and retain outstanding and diverse faculty and staff during a time of renewal

Essential Tasks:

Much of UNCG’s success is due to the hard work and commitment of its faculty. In the last five years, UNCG has hired 429 new faculty (91 net new; 338 “replacement” slots). This transition presents an opportunity for the next Provost to profoundly shape the culture and future direction of UNCG for the next generation. The Provost will be charged with developing newer faculty and recruiting teacher scholars of all ranks who are excited to help build on the existing faculty culture at UNCG and its deep commitment to scholarly excellence and student success. The Provost will work to recruit and retain a
diverse faculty and staff with teacher-scholars and employees that more closely mirror the increasingly diverse student body at UNCG.

Key Responsibility:

Further strengthen the educational experience for all students to reach their full potential

Essential Tasks:

UNCG has a long tradition of being student centered and focusing on excellence in undergraduate and graduate student learning. With an increasingly diverse student body, the Provost must create structures
that promote access and success inside and outside of the classroom. The Provost will be attentive to supporting ways the learning environment can be adapted and improved to attend to diverse needs, and to support an inclusive environment and success for all students.

Working closely with other senior University leaders, the next Provost will need to pay close attention to student success, focusing on improving graduation rates and factors such as enrollment strategy, financial support for students, retention, degree efficiency, and time to graduation, in addition to offering excellent and relevant academic degree programs that appeal to students and employers in North Carolina and across the region. The University has made great strides in these areas, but there is opportunity for an innovative Provost to leverage UNCG’s gains in recent years to further strengthen the student experience.

Key Responsibility:

Strengthen organizational structures, processes, and technology to promote innovation and efficiency

Essential Tasks:

The Provost at UNCG has a large and diverse portfolio connected to the academic mission of the University. The scale and complexity of the institution has increased over time, and the structures and processes through which the work is accomplished must be further developed to keep pace. Collaborating closely with other units across campus, especially Information Technology Services (ITS), the Office of Online Learning (OOL), University Teaching and Learning Commons (UTLC), and Finance and Administration, the next Provost will need to evaluate existing workflows and invest in technology systems that are easy to use and achieve consistency, reliability, and efficiency. By leveraging technology appropriately throughout the academic enterprise, the next Provost will open innovative pathways to engaging potential new students and free up human capital and other valuable resources to focus on implementing the University’s ambitious and innovative strategic priorities. Faculty, staff, and student infrastructure, support, and training will also be essential as new teaching and learning environments are
established.

Key Responsibility:

Enhance the University’s commitment to building a community that fosters, celebrates, and appreciates diversity and inclusion

Essential Tasks:

UNCG has a deep commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion throughout its campus. Much work has been done to ensure these themes are embedded in the campus culture. The Provost will be a strong champion of this commitment. The thoughtful perspectives and commitment to open inquiry that characterize a UNCG education can only be fully realized in a community that embraces diversity, broadly defined. Working with other University leaders, the Provost will pursue efforts to improve campus climate, eliminate retention and graduation gaps between groups, and generally enable the high ideals of inclusivity to be achieved. In all parts of the job, the Provost will celebrate UNCG’s diversity, leveraging all forms of difference to generate creative solutions to society’s most pressing problems.

Key Responsibility:

Serve as an important member of the Chancellor’s cabinet and the University’s senior leadership

Essential Tasks:

Dr. Gilliam seeks a strong partner to lead the faculty and academic enterprise through the institution’s next phase of transformation and growth. The Provost will anchor the Chancellor’s Council, including departmental leaders from Student Affairs, University Advancement, Information Technology Services, Strategy and Policy, Finance and Administration, Human Resources, Intercollegiate Athletics, Strategic Communications, Research and Engagement, the General Counsel’s Office, and Enrollment Management, as well as the Chief of Staff. As such, the Provost will be an active and energetic participant in policy formulation and implementation, budgetary decisions, and problem solving, and offer advice and counsel on the implications of institutional decisions on both the academic program and the student experience.
