Detailed Description:
The purpose of this role is to provide strategic oversight of career development in the College of Arts and Sciences and the COMPASS program. This role will manage the career counseling needs of CAS students and collaborate with faculty and the Dean's Office to ensure career-related programmatic needs are met. This role will also directly supervise the Career Counselor designated for CAS undergraduate students.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Career Counseling:
  • Provides individual career counseling (appointments and drop-in advising) for College of Arts and Sciences students and alumni in the areas of career planning, job and internship search, and graduate school planning.
  • Counsels students on decisions regarding relationship of major to career choice and/or graduate school, researching occupational information, and conducting informational interviews.
  • Teaches students how to develop an individualized job search plan, prepare resume and cover letter, and participate effectively in a variety of interview settings.
  • Critiques students' written materials including resumes, cover letters, and personal statements and offers direct, personalized feedback.
  • Conducts individual mock interviews and offers verbal feedback to improve student effectiveness in securing employment or graduate school acceptance.

    Strategic Planning and Program Development:
  • In accordance with the mission and strategic plan of the Career Development Center and the College of Arts and Sciences, develops and evaluates a comprehensive career development program to meet the needs of undergraduate students from the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Oversees the administration of the College of Arts and Sciences Career Readiness Program Compass program. Coordinates classroom presentations, workshops, torero treks and networking events to meet the career development needs of students within the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Develops, delivers, and assesses group programs, events, and workshops addressing career exploration, communication (resume, cover letters, and interviews), job/internship search strategy, networking, and graduate/professional school preparation specifically for undergraduate student within the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Serves as the Career Development Center's liaison to the Dean's Office in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Attends monthly College of Arts & Sciences Dean's meetings and annual strategic planning retreat; attends chairs and department meetings as requested.
  • In collaboration with Associate Director, oversees the implementation of the College Professional Development Compass Program.
  • Assists in developing an Annual Career Development Center report for College of Arts and Sciences.
  • In collaboration with Assistant Director for Planning and Assessment, assesses the Compass Career Readiness Program and usage of career development resources.

    Liaison Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with and builds strong partnerships with the College of Arts and Science administrators and faculty in order to implement programs to meet the career development needs of College of Arts and Sciences students.
  • Specifically serves as the liaison to the Pre-Health Advising Office and Undergraduate Office of Research and faculty within the science and math departments.
  • Partners with the Employer Relations staff to develop and maintain relationships with employers, parents, graduate schools and alumni from various sectors and industries to increase internship, job and graduate school opportunities for students and alumni from the College of Arts and Sciences.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Manages the College of Arts and Sciences Career Counselor position in consultation with the Associate Director of the Career Development Center.
  • Conducts annual performance evaluation with career counselor.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director, provides project management supervision to Graduate Assistant and Career Interns.

    Professional Development:
  • Represents the Career Development Center and College of Arts and Sciences at professional conferences and meetings.
  • Serves as a liaison to professional associations in order to stay abreast of current developments in career counseling, graduate school and employment trends.

    Job Requirements:
    Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in related area (Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs, etc.)
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience providing career counseling in a university setting with special emphasis in guiding students from a liberal arts background;

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preference of 5 years of experience working in a Career Center.
  • Strong knowledge of career development topics including assessments, resumes and cover letters, job and internship search strategies, interviewing, and LinkedIn.
  • Familiarity with and understanding of a liberal arts education.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing professional and collaborative relationships with students, alumni, staff, administrators, faculty, employers, and parents; proven ability to collaborate and develop programming with multiple campus partners.
  • Working knowledge and awareness of college student development theories, career development theories, and/or counseling theories.
  • Proficiency in program development and evaluation; demonstrated ability to develop and measure student learning outcomes.
  • Experience with administering and interpreting career assessments such as the Strong Interest Inventory and Myers Briggs Type Indicator.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to write/edit professional correspondence and reports.
  • Strong public speaking skills; demonstrated ability to present to students, faculty, administrators, and parents.
  • Experience supervising counselors, graduate students and/or student workers, including conducting evaluations.
  • Knowledge of graduate school admission process; experience advising students on the application process, required prerequisites, and personal statement/statement of purpose
  • The ability to manage time effectively while working on multiple projects.
  • Experience working with Career Management System (Symplicity, Handshake, 12Twenty.)

    Tools & Equipment Used:
    Personal computer with MS-based software and Internet connection, telephone and voicemail system, audio-visual equipment (laptop computer, LCD projector, television), printer, fax machine, photocopier. Experience with Career Management System software preferred.
