Description:

The Keasling laboratory in the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking a highly motivated individuals to participate in research area focused on four different areas, that being, synthetic biology, synthetic engineering, biochemistry and microbiology. The Assistant Project Scientist will need to make significant and creative contributions to a research in the area of bio-chemical engineering. Specifically, engineer polyketide synthases to produce commodity chemicals and drug molecules in streptomyces. The Assistant Project Scientist is expected to focus on host engineering and synthetic biology tools development. In addition to revealing the mechanism of novel reactions on assembly line enzymes (PKS, NRPSs).

Responsibilities:

This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of the production of FKBP ligands using their native producers and heterologous hosts. Focusing on engineering the FKBP ligands' biosynthetic gene clusters to produce FKBP ligands' derivatives.
The candidate will help to determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. He/she will design specific projects, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques. In some cases, the candidate may supervise students or technicians regarding the technical aspects of the research, including methods development, trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results and planning follow-up experiments.

Minimum/Basic Qualifications required at the time of application:
  • PhD or equivalent International Degree.

Additional Qualifications must be met by the start of the job:
  • At least 2 years of research experience in research laboratory.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 2 years of working in production of FKBP ligands.
  • At least 2 years of working in a synthetic biology lab.

Salary: This is a full-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience.
