Position Summary:

This is an animal care position working in AAALAC accredited animal research
facilities operated by the Office of Vice President for Research – Animal Resources.
Incumbent will perform all aspects of animal care and husbandry in ABSL-1 and ABSL-2 environments utilizing multiple species of animals. This position will report to the Laboratory Animal Facilities Supervisor, Veterinary BioResources Facility. The incumbent will provide for the daily care and husbandry of animals including feeding, watering, sanitation, animal health surveillance, enrichment and environmental monitoring following established schedules and procedures. Monitors animals daily for overall health status. Work will include performing sanitization duties such as; cleaning, disinfection, preparation of cages, animal rooms, primary enclosures, ancillary areas and equipment following prescribed schedules and methods. Work includes the handling, restraint and transport of multiple species of animals.
Operates pressure washers, auto water systems, biological safety cabinets, and IVC HEPA racks. Maintains records such as animal room logs, census activity sheets, etc. Assist with the receiving, health assessment, and identification of animals as directed. Performs minor preventative maintenance duties and integrated pest management (IPM) tasks following established schedules. Assist in quality assurance and standard operating procedures development. Participates in staff meetings, continuing education and training classes as directed. Provides assistance to animal care staff and research personnel. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Ability to perform animal husbandry duties in an ABSL-1 & ABSL-2 research environment utilizing multiple laboratory animal and agricultural species. Knowledge of the Guide for the Care & Use of Laboratory Animals. Experience handling, restraining and transporting large livestock; including experience operating transport
trucks with goose neck type livestock trailers and livestock restraint equipment. Careful attention to detail; good communication and keen observational skills. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to promote and foster teamwork in order to meet program and research objectives.

Physical Demands:

Withstand sustained periods of physical activity, such as, standing, bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and lift at least 50 pounds. Restrain and handle large livestock using equipment and mechanical devices. Work sometimes under challenging conditions (high humidity/temperature, unpleasant odors, animal excreta and noise). Work involves some exposure to biohazards, chemicals and/or physical risks, which involve following established safety procedures. Wear PPE (protective clothing, face shields, safety glasses, dust mask, respirators, and gloves) and stand on hard surfaces for prolonged periods of time. Work may be physically demanding, involving the transport, relocation and positioning of supplies and caging equipment.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Performs daily animal care and husbandry duties for animals in research vivariums; including feeding, watering, animal handling/transport, animal health checks, cage changing, providing enrichment and environmental monitoring. Assures animals are appropriately maintained and cared for in accordance with standard operating procedures and supervisors instructions.

Cleans and sanitizes animal rooms, ancillary areas, primary enclosures and caging equipment following established procedures and schedules. Transports equipment and animals. Keeps work areas clean and organized. Performs preventative maintenance duties (seasonally) at research farm. Maintains supply inventories, performs minor preventative maintenance tasks and IPM duties as directed by supervisor.
