Position Summary:

We are seeking one (1) white-tailed deer research technicians for participation in a deer research project funded by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. The project will investigate population-level impacts of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) of white-tailed deer in northern Newton and Searcy counties. The field research team will consist of one graduate student, one research coordinator, and four technicians. Technicians will gain extensive experience in capturing fawns, and collaring fawns with VHF collars, tracking fawns, investigating mortalities, and deploying and monitoring camera traps. Technicians will also collect morphometric data, and samples of blood, saliva, feces, and urine.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:

Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, biology, zoology, natural resource management, or a related field is preferred. Previous experience gathering scientific data and work well in a team. Experience working with private landowners is also desired. Previous experience working with ungulates, especially with capture using the above methods and tracking of deer is preferred. Experience with camera traps and working in bio-secure environments is also desirable.

Ability to maintain a professional demeanor towards university personnel, Arkansas GFC employees, and the public is necessary.

Physical Demands:

Meet the physical demands of the northern Arkansas landscape (i.e., hiking in steep, rugged terrain), and work irregular hours during the day and/or night. Sitting and standing for long periods of time, working variable shifts/schedules. Driving 4×4 vehicles. Tolerate biting insects and venomous snakes. Living in close-quarters with a small crew.
