Job Description

The Database and Application Administrator, under general direction, will be a key contributor to planning, analysis, coordination, support and maintenance of the ERP system Ellucian Banner and all components such as: Banner 9, ESM, Degree Works, Workflow, BEIS, BEP, and EEI. This position requires experience setting technical standards and leading the direction for implementing these services. The database administrator may also serve as a primary point of contact between the Enterprise Applications group and functional users; serve as the primary point of contact for data interfaces with outside entities and technical support resources.

Responsibilities:

  • ORACLE PROFICIENCY: You’ll install, setup, and configure Oracle, as needed, to support campus applications and custom solutions for the University according to established standards and industry best practices. This position is responsible for database tuning and performance optimization. Additionally, you’ll work collaboratively with the campus community to plan and apply Oracle security patches and application upgrades. You’ll assist with annual audit inquiries and improvements on audit findings. You’ll proactively monitor alerts and logs to troubleshoot database performance, making corrections where necessary by overseeing the resolution of performance problems and the execution of recoveries.
  • FOCUS ON BEST PRACTICES: You’ll work collaboratively to ensure Banner and the Oracle environment operates in accordance with established security and supports best practices (including troubleshooting and resolution Oracle database and application server problems). You’ll coordinate efforts with assessment, remediation and implementation of best practices for Banner and Oracle environments (including assurance of version control over Oracle and Banner-specific software on database servers and application servers).
  • MANAGE SOFTWARE RELEASES: You’ll develop and contribute to planned software releases, test and deployment plans. In order to accomplish this, you’ll liaise with developer and functional analyst staff to help coordinate Banner and database-related efforts and efficient service operations.
  • DOCUMENTATION: You’ll create and maintain documentation of standard operating procedures, including, but not limited to: installation manuals, test & validation plans, operations manuals, system recovery strategies, system data flow diagrams, database architecture, user security, and other similar post-deployment operational documentation artifacts.
  • SOLUTIONS. SOLUTIONS. SOLUTIONS: From start to finish, you are involved in daily operations. In any given day, you could be supporting existing applications, installing new applications, creating and maintaining data backups for disaster recovery, refreshing non-production and production environments, providing emergency support for urgent request, and/or planning the timing of upgrades, patches, and other regular support work with university customers and the Information Technology team.
  • COMMUNICATION & RELATIONSHIPS: You’ll represent the University and ITS in a professional manner at all times. This includes serving as the lead technical liaison for customers, vendors and sometimes co-workers. This position strongly partners with members of the Cross-Functional User Group to advise and coordinate the application of patches and upgrades for Banner and related applications.
  • SOFTWARE EVALUATION: Acting as a consultant to campus, you’ll get into the technical details of evaluating new software applications. You’ll answer questions and coordinate the technical guidance and training for application users, oversee consistency with design documentation, and participate in the development of system and programming standards.
  • REPORTING: Writes optimized queries and stored procedures in support of enterprise reporting platforms such as SSRS and Tableau. Assists in developing reports, interactive dashboards, data visualization, and CRM functionality to support fundraising and financial business processes. Assist in refining user requirements.
  • APPLICATION SUPPORT: As a matter of regular practice, you’ll support campus applications, including: Banner, Cognos, Degree Works, Blackboard, and others. This includes assisting application developers and functional users with database projects, requests, and moderate to complex queries. You’ll coordinate support activities in accordance with established priorities, track progress involving external resources (including coordination of significant Go/No-Go decisions and upgrades for Oracle and Banner). Additionally, you’ll create database design plans for installation and testing of databases.
  • PROJECT TEAM MEMBER: You’ll be assigned to one or more active projects at any given time. Participating a Core Team members, you’ll collaborate with the project leader to develop work plans and time schedules for projects including outlining phases, identifying subject matter experts, and leading integration and user acceptance testing efforts.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent experience.
  • At least eight (8) years of extensive experience in Oracle database administration and application support.
  • Knowledge and advanced skill in Ellucian Banner, Linux and Oracle database architecture, SQL and Oracle applications development tools. Specific knowledge of the following: Ellucian Banner ERP, Banner 9/XE Administration, Banner Enterprise Identity Services (BEIS), Single Sign-on Configuration/Support (SSO), Degree Works, RMAN, Ellucian Solution Manager (ESM), Application Navigator, WebLogic, Tomcat, Shell scripting
  • Proficiency of the Information Technology Interface Library (ITIL)
  • Ellucian BANNER experience required
  • Experience working with Structured Query Language (SQL), PL/SQL preferred
  • Experience working with relational database table structures
  • Knowledge of shell scripting and or other languages (Powershell, Unix, Curl, Json, Perl, Python)
  • Version control and code repositories such as GIT, Eclipse, SVN Tortoise
