OPS Laboratory Technician
Job Description:The laboratory of Dr. Erica Dale is seeking a laboratory technician to assist with a broad range of laboratory duties related to this lab’s research on neuromodulation of breathing after spinal cord injury. Seeking candidates with experience in neurophysiology or biomedical engineering laboratory environment and experience with taking various electrophysiological measurements in rats.
This role requires strong attention to detail and a strong work ethic. The employee will work with laboratory personnel including the laboratory manager, postdoctoral associates, and graduate students to support multiple ongoing research projects. Specific responsibilities will be tailored to the employee based on their strengths and experience. Tasks may include but are not limited to:
- Assisting in pre-operative and post-operative rat care- Assisting in taking electrophysiological measurements in rats- Assisting in writing and optimization of codes in Matlab and/or CED Spike2- Performing cryo-sectioning, immunohistochemistry, and qPCR on neural tissues- Assisting the laboratory manager in maintenance of the laboratory equipment, stocking supplies, and careful organization of supplies and samples- Assisting in development of new laboratory techniques and protocols- Assisting in scheduling and organization of multiple projects simultaneously being conducted in the lab- Performing various forms of data organization and analysis using programs such as Matlab, Graph Pad, and CED Spike2Supervision: Moderate supervision. Candidate will be expected to have a degree of independence after being trained in specific tasks, with daily support and supervision provided by the laboratory manager and weekly/bi-weekly support and supervision provided directly by PI.
Normal Work Schedule: Candidate must be available at 40 hours/week. Most activities will be conducted M-F 8:00-5:00 pm, with occasional night, weekend or holiday availability as needed. Care is always taken in planning experimental timelines to limit work outside of M-F 8:00-5:00 pm, however, depending on the experiments being conducted, some degree of flexibility is desired.
Expected Salary:$14-$18 dollars per hour based on experience and skills.
Minimum Requirements:Associate's degree in an appropriate area; or a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Proficiency in using MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint and Excel). Strong organizational skills and a capacity to follow written procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:Preferred applicant will have a Bachelor’s degree in biology, biomedical engineering, or a related field and 2+ years of experience in a neurophysiology or biomedical engineering laboratory environment.
Experience working with rats, experience taking various electrophysiological measures in rats, such as EMG, and/or ability to write code and create scripts for data acquisition and analysis are preferred.
