General Summary

Eastern Michigan University's School of Communication, Media and Theatre Arts seeks an accomplished educator/theatre artist/director for a full time, tenure track position beginning August, 2021. We seek a generalist whose knowledge and experience spans the areas of educational theatre, TYA, and applied drama, and who will oversee programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels. We particularly seek a candidate whose teaching is informed by professional TYA experience and is attuned to emerging practices in arts integration, diversity, and inclusion in the field of TYA/Applied Theatre. The successful candidate has the opportunity to build on over 50 years of history and reposition this Applied Drama & Theatre for the Young program for the next generation of students.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a track record of creating programming and theatre arts experiences. They will demonstrate leadership, management skills, and the ability to collaborate within the university as well as the greater community. They will participate in local, national, and international organizations and seek opportunities to broaden and deepen the experience of their students. They will be passionate about creating work for young people and training future artists/educators to continue this type of work in educational, community, and professional settings.

The successful candidate will lead an MA/MFA graduate program and an undergraduate minor; teach undergraduate and graduate classes in TYA, applied theatre, theatre arts, and arts integration; and have the opportunity to direct touring and mainstage productions. They will also work across campus building relationships with EMU's College of Education, ENGAGE @ EMU, and other areas as interest and time allows.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Teach contractual load of undergraduate and graduate courses as assigned by the department or school.

Assign and submit grades in accordance with established University schedules.

Keep posted office hours during the week which are scheduled at times most beneficial to students.

Provide academic advising to students, if applicable.

Serve on search committees for hiring of new faculty members, departmental committees and other service committees across the university.

Participate in activities such as student registration, orientation, convocations and commencements.

Attend and participate in scheduled departmental meetings and functions.

Provide other support service to the department, college and/or university, if applicable.

Engage in pursuits that enable them to remain current in their respective disciplines.

Engage in pursuits that help to further organize and contribute to growth of the body of knowledge in their respective disciplines, and/or to explore interdisciplinary implications.

Perform related Departmental duties as required.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between EMU and the EMU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:
  • A terminal degree in Theatre or Theatre for the Young completed no later than August 2021,
  • A minimum of three years of experience teaching in higher education,
  • Administrative experience in an academic or arts organization,
  • A track record of directing and publishing in conventional and non-traditional forums, and
  • Experience in mentoring students for careers in performing arts fields including students from historically underrepresented groups in higher education
