Job Summary

The JCCC Police Officer provides law enforcement and public safety services to the college community to include enforcement of criminal statutes, parking and traffic enforcement, crime prevention, patrol activity, accident investigation, resolution of domestic and other disturbances, prosecution support, non-criminal public safety services, enforcement of college policies, rules, and regulations. To carry out these responsibilities, officers monitor activity in buildings, patrol grounds for suspicious activities, and watch for any safety hazards. Officers answer calls for service typical of the college environment such as responding to medical emergencies, locking and unlocking classroom doors, money escorts, recovering lost and found items, and keep campus thoroughfares and lots unobstructed. All assignments involve tactful, and courteous treatment of the public and conscientious and efficient performance of duties. This function/position has been designated as an essential. This means that when the College is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at the College.

Required Qualifications

High School diploma or GED equivalent
Minimum age 21
U.S. Citizen
Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to maintain an insurable driving record
Kansas certified and commissioned police officer or has the ability to obtain within 3 months
Maintain qualification and certification with firearms, ASP baton, and Oleo resin Capsicum (OC) spray
Ability to perform all duties of a JCCC Police Officer
Ability to remain in work location or be able to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at the College
Ability to participate in evening and weekend work as is sometimes required for communication with subordinates, other supervisors, and the college students, staff and faculty with whom interaction is essential to accomplish tasks and assignments and JCCC goals.
Ability to be punctual and timely for work reporting
Ability to work in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and employees
Effective leadership skills
Excellent oral and written communication skill
Good organizational and interpersonal skills
Ability to enter and retrieve data from department computers and programs (Banner, Astra, Record Management, CAD and ExaqVision camera system)
Ability to operate police department equipment effectively (e.g. radios, vehicles, safety equipment, etc.)

With more than 34,000 students enrolled in credit and continuing education classes each semester, Johnson County Community College is the state's third largest institution of higher education and the largest of its 19 community colleges.

JCCC offers a full range of undergraduate credit courses that form the first two years of most college curricula. The college has more than 100 transfer agreements with area colleges and universities that ensure admittance to specific programs such as business, engineering and education. JCCC students are able to begin their first two years of a four-year degree program here and complete that degree on schedule.

In addition, more than 50 one- and two-year career and certificate programs prepare students to enter the job market in high-employment fields. The college maintains extensive student support services such as computer labs, math labs, a writing center and a learning center.

JCCC’s continuing education program is the largest, most comprehensive in the Kansas City area. Through the Center for Business and Technology, participants can take courses in management and computer application or seminars and workshops that lead to professional certification and licensure. Personal enrichment classes, on topics ranging from gardening to money management, are also offered, while nationally and internationally performing and visual artists appear in the performance spaces and Gallery of Art in JCCC’s Carlsen Center.

The campus, centrally located in the county on 234 acres, opened in 1972. There are 18 major buildings on campus. Currently under construction are the Regnier Center and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.

JCCC’s full-time faculty and staff numbers about 875. Another 1,800 people work as adjunct faculty or part-time staff. Most faculty members have master’s degrees, and many have or are earning doctorates.

JCCC returns about $2.70 to the community for every tax dollar it collects. The college's total tangible economic impact on the community is more than $182 million annually.
