Position Description:


This position will manage the North Carolina Botanical Garden Shop. The Shop Manager is responsible for the merchandising, profitability, customer service, visual strategies, operation and staffing for the Garden Shop. The Shop Manager works daily in multiple systems including but not limited to point of sale, eCommerce, and campus systems. In November 2020, an online Garden Shop store was launched, and the Shop Manager will continue to expand this initiative. The Shop Manager promotes a positive work environment while meeting the financial performance goals set by shop management. The shop is supervised by the Director of Business Operations, works with the NCBG Business Office on all financial transactions, and works in collaboration with the Garden Shop Committee to accomplish the goal of the Garden to provide a positive retail experience to the visitors to the shop and Garden.

The NCBG Garden Shop’s purpose is to serve as a “portal” to the NCBG and to increase interest and awareness in the NCBG through a positive retail experience. The shop is designed to help foster engagement through the selling of products which directly relate to the NCBG and its mission.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Customer Service – Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
Mathematics – Knowledge of business arithmetic and the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and correctly.
Communication-Oral – Ability to convey information orally to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the message. Ability to listen and respond appropriately to information from others.
Sales and Promotions – Knowledge of principles and methods for showing, promoting, and selling products or services. This includes promoting strategy and tactics, product demonstration, sales techniques, and sales control systems.
Program Knowledge/Records Administration – Knowledge of and ability to maintain accurate records of merchandise received, inventoried and sold. Knowledge of and ability to maintain, verify, and coordinate cash accounting records from a variety of sources.
Managing Work and Performance – Ability to assign work and to establish work rules and acceptable levels of quality and quantity of work. Ability to review work, evaluate performance of others, and develop individuals’ competencies.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, design, or horticulture; five years related experience or acceptable equivalent. Experience with Lightspeed or other comparable POS system and retail of living plant material.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements:

Must be able to safely lift or move up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation
