Job Description Summary:

Position Responsibilities
Financial Reporting

  • Examine and analyze accounting records, financial statements and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness and compliance with University policies, generally accepted accounting principles, and applicable external regulations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of GAAP and new accounting principles/pronouncements. Stay informed of all accounting updates and access impact of such to the University’s financial statements.
  • Provide leadership in implementation of new accounting standards as required.
  • Assist in year-end closing process, preparation of audit work-papers and schedules, and work with external auditors in response to their queries.
  • Perform select bank and balance sheet account reconciliations and monitor general ledger accounts for proper expenditure classifications.
  • Primary back-up for Controller and provide backup for other Controller’s Office staff as needed.
    Grants Accounting
  • Supervise Research Accountant and provide continual staff development.
  • Lead all financial review and reporting of grants related operations, including audit preparation and A-133 financial statement and footnote preparation.
  • Manage internal grant processes such as project close-out, allocations, and reviews.
  • Maintain current knowledge of research activities and work with Sponsored Research Services Division to ensure compliance.
  • Assist with the preparation of the Facilities and Administrative Cost Proposal.
    Systems Maintenance
  • Maintain tables of chart-field values, update accounting policies, Controller’s Office webpages, training materials and communications as appropriate. This includes creation and delivery of training materials to internal and external users.
  • Upgrade, enhance, implement and document accounting systems, making use of current technology. Direct and coordinate work of others within the department to develop, test and modify programs.
  • Keep up-to-date on new technologies and apply knowledge to improve work processes.
  • Analyze existing information processing systems to evaluate effectiveness and develop new systems to enhance workflow and services to campus users.

  • Perform other related duties as requested by Controller, Chief Financial Officer and University President.

Minimum Qualifications: :

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Accounting or Financial Management
  • Three years of accounting experience with progressive responsibility
  • System query and/or report writing experience
  • Strong information technology / database management skills
  • Intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • CPA licensure required

Preferred Qualifications: :

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years of accounting experience with progressive responsibility
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Financials or other ERP system
  • Substantial accounting experience in an academic and culturally diverse environment
  • Strong knowledge of fund accounting, particularly as it relates to research and grants.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases and fundamental knowledge of SQL.
  • Knowledge of IRS forms 990 & 990-T preparation

Physical Demands:
