The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Associate to work in the Cell-Signaling Bioanalysis Lab ( on various facets of cancer systems biology research.

Potential projects include the epigenetic mechanisms of heterogeneous tumor-suppressor inactivation, non-coding RNA-mediated regulatory heterogeneities, and translational research related to therapy compliance. Research will involve methods development, model construction–parameterization–refinement, and detailed quantitative experimentation. Research Associates will have the opportunity to supervise undergraduate trainees, teach guest lectures, and write research proposals.

QUALIFICATION REQUIRMENTS: Candidates must have a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics by the start date and demonstrated expertise in modern functional genomics, mouse modeling, long non-coding RNAs, and the ability to secure external independent funding. The successful candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills, first-author publications, and ability to work well in a highly interactive, creative, and collaborative environment.

Required skills:

  • standard cloning procedures and molecular biology techniques
  • RNA isolation from cells and tissues, Real Time PCR and analysis of results
  • culture and transfection of animal cells and establishing of stable cell lines
  • CRISPR/Cas9 mediated knockout generation of protein coding and noncoding genes
  • protein isolation, purification and detection techniques
  • mice handling, breading, genotyping, behavioral and physical tests, tissues isolation
  • experience with high throughput sequencing (RNA-seq, ChIRP-seq, SHAPE-MaP) – library preparation and data analysis
