Lab and Research Technician 1 employees focus on performing routine research tasks and developing skills. They assume routine to moderately complex technical support for research projects. Work is routine and can be performed with some degree of independence when following established protocols and procedures. Lab and Research Technician 1 employees perform tasks as assigned by supervisor.

The Deppmann Lab in the Department of Biology at the University of Virginia currently seeks a Laboratory Technician II to provide scientific and technical support for laboratory-based neuroscience research. The Deppmann Lab studies different aspects of peripheral nervous system development including competition for survival as well as synapse formation/restriction. To understand the development and pathology within the peripheral nervous system, we use in vivo and in vitro models. A willingness to handle rodents and to learn sterile tissue/cell culture techniques used in the laboratory is a must.

Experience performing basic molecular techniques including DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis and experience with biochemical techniques such as Western blotting, cryosectioning and immunostaining is preferred. In addition, the qualified candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work independently and accurately with attention to detail and have an eagerness to learn new techniques.

Duties will include animal handling and maintenance of a portion of the mouse colony, iGonad surgery, tissue harvest for cytof protocols, isolation and culture of sympathetic neurons, mammalian cell culture technique, and manufacturing of microfluidic devices. The applicant will perform literature searches and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel for data analysis. Additionally, training and supervision of undergraduate students will be part of applicant’s responsibilities.

This full-time position will remain open until filled.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. A BA/BS degree in Biology, Neuroscience, or related field is preferred.

Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Attention to detail.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of general lab procedures.
  • Animal handling skills a plus, but will train.
  • Knowledge of neurotrophin biology.
  • Fluorescence and confocal microscopy a plus

Licensure: None

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
