Probationary Police Officer - Security

Regular Full-time, Pay Range MR06

Perform law enforcement, crime prevention duties and other general police/security services, enforce state and local laws as well as policies and procedures of the University of Tennessee, and conduct proactive patrol by means of foot, bicycle, motorcycle, or vehicle.  Officers are entrusted with the protection of life and property of those who live, work, and visit at the University. The University of Tennessee Police Department operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year.

Job Functions/Responsibilities:

Operational
Respond to emergency calls to include but not be limited to the following: alarms (fire, panic, holdup), hazardous material spills and leaks, traffic crashes, criminal activity in progress, assistance for injured/sick, and crimes in progress.
Respond to non-emergency calls to include but not be limited to the following law enforcement or safety and security concerns: Situations that indicate potential for violence or potential volatility and/or require coordination between UTPD and other UT departments  or non campus agencies for sensitive student, staff, or faculty issues; lock/unlock buildings; assist motorist
Conduct proactive area patrols by means of foot, bicycle, motorcycle or vehicle. 
Provide initial investigation for all calls of criminal activity and accidents.
Make arrests, issues citations, and gives warnings.
Provide security for events such as athletic events, concerts, visiting dignitaries, and numerous other social activities where security personnel may be required to provide crowd control and maintain order.
Appear in court as prosecuting officer or witness and presents testimony. 
Appear at university administrative hearings to provide testimony.
Protect and maintains crime scene as necessary
Acquire knowledge of state, federal, and local laws with the understanding of how to enforce these prior to completion of probationary training
Acquire knowledge of University including department policies and procedures with understanding of how to apply these to daily tasks prior to completion of probationary training
Perform other nonspecific tasks assigned

Communication
Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects and informs them of options available and additional processes to follow.
Prepare and submit applicable offense reports, follow-up reports, and other documentation as needed.
Contact with members of the University to include students, parents, staff, faculty, and visitors to give information/directions, take police reports, conduct preliminary investigations, and provide victim assistance.

Community Oriented Policing
Serve the community through proactive patrol of assigned area to identify potential security related situations and utilizing problem solving abilities independently and through partnerships.
Develop rapport with members of the university community as well as surrounding areas, and establishes partnerships with community members to develop prevention strategies.
Provide safety, crime prevention, and community policing information to contacts over the course of patrol duties, and participates in community relations activities.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

High school diploma or GED required.

Required level/type of experience:

Must be 21 years of age.

Competencies/Qualifications:

Good written and verbal communication skills. Positive interpersonal skills. Problem solving skills.

Ability to be certified and maintain certification as a commissioned police officer by the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards Training Academy. Ability to successfully complete the officer Field Training Program. Ability to successfully complete required  annual inservice training. Ability to work in a multicultural setting.
