Position Summary:

The Department Chair is a full-time administrative faculty member who reports to the Associate Campus Dean and works closely with the university's academic administrators, academic advising staff, administrative staff, peers, and faculty. The ideal candidate has strong leadership skills, is flexible and creative in problem solving, and makes a strong commitment to preparing undergraduate students for success in their general education courses.

Principal Duties:

  • Maintain the mission, quality and integrity of the program, reflecting TCSPP standards.

  • Monitor compliance with state regulatory agencies on meeting state requirements for General Education in undergraduate programs, in collaboration with the Office of Accreditation, Licensure, and State Authorizations.

  • Responsible for the development and oversight of general education courses.

  • Coordinate general education course offerings, term and faculty scheduling to meet the needs of all undergraduate programs.

  • Onboard new general education instructors, ensuring all faculty are highly skilled and trained in general education best teaching practices.

  • Develop and lead retention efforts for students in general education courses.

  • Assess the effectiveness of the general education department by conducting annual academic program reviews and periodic self-studies.

  • Oversee department budget and ensure fiscal responsibility.

  • Supervise all faculty teaching general education courses, ensuring they meet general education teaching expectations.

  • Review student grade change requests and other petitions as they specifically relate to the general education courses.

  • Serve as liaison for faculty support to resolve classroom concerns with student behaviors or curriculum concerns.

  • Develop and ensure annual department goals are being achieved.

  • Create a General Education training manual which includes outreach processes for at-risk

  • students.

  • Manage student success and academic progress in a fast-paced online environment.

  • Collaborate with university personnel on all policies and processes.

  • Engage in university committee service, community service, and scholarship.

  • Attend and participate in the Online Department Chair team meetings.

  • Work in a team-oriented environment that emphasizes collaboration and personal accountability.

Travel Requirements:

  • Some travel may be required.

Position Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in a related field.

  • Three to five years of teaching experience including undergraduate students.

  • Record of successful leadership in faculty and staff development, supervision, and evaluation.

  • Record of experience in program management and evaluation.

  • Record of intellectual and professional contribution/scholarship to the field.

  • Record of success in student retention, advising and mentoring, including with non-traditional learners.

  • Commitment to advocating for the learning and development needs of students in distance learning environments.

  • Commitment to applied research and the development of community relationships for students and faculty.

  • Commitment to the recruitment and development of a diverse faculty team.

  • Experience, skill, and success leading and managing a large and complex team of professionals toward a common set of goals.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, team-building, and human relations skills.

  • Experience with data-based decision making in academic environments.

  • Evidence of compatibility with the TCSPP mission.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with academic accreditation and program evaluation

  • Demonstrated strategic planning experience

  • Prior experience leading a General Education Department
