Job Summary: The Communications Specialist works with a department or area to develop and implement communication plans and activities to support the goals of a specific department, a college and/or The University.

Additional Department Summary: The Communications Specialist works with a department or area to develop and implement communication plans and activities to support the goals of a specific department, a college and/or The University. The communications role will support the Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute (AEI) and The EDGE in terms of overall communications, marketing, social media, newsletter, promotional materials, and event management. The job will also be responsible for helping implement an overall marketing and event management strategy at The EDGE and AEI.

In this role, the individual will interface with senior level executives including CEOs of both small and larger organizations, providing support to tenants and members of The EDGE as well as mentors, coaches, guest speakers, faculty and students working at The EDGE and AEI.

The selected candidate will manage correspondence and communications via updating and maintaining social media accounts, websites, and newsletters in order to highlight external and internal programs, activities, and events. In collaboration with the AEI Executive Director, the individual will write newsletters and blog posts and produce webinars and other media. The individual will interview new and current EDGE members and tenants and create videos and other media for posting on the web sites and in the EDGE building. This individual will work closely with the Culverhouse marketing and communication team, coordinating with them on efforts that should be publicized to the College and University. The job holder will help update the CRM system and Constant Contact (used for newsletter and other email marketing).

Additionally, this position will be tasked with creating marketing materials including PowerPoint presentations, flyers, posters, brochures, social media graphics, website graphics, etc. in accordance with UA/Culverhouse guidelines. These materials are needed for ongoing visibility and specific event marketing (e.g., business plan competitions, workshops, fundraising campaigns, etc.).

The position holder will oversee student employees for additional support in departmental outreach efforts.

The Communications Specialist will also take the lead role in event planning/management including identifying creative event concepts, corresponding with attendees, sponsors, volunteers, and vendors; setting up and running a 3rd party event app; organizing a database of attendees/contestants; and executing event needs on the day of. Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends as needed to help with events. Project management skills are important for the person in this role to be successful. This individual will work closely with communications and event management teams in Culverhouse, Office for Research and Economic Development and the University Strategic Communications team (as needed).

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Marketing, or Advertising and one (1) year experience in journalism, public relations, marketing, or communications; OR Master's degree Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Marketing, or Advertising. Related student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student oriented experience will be considered. To be considered student experience, it must be detailed in the employment section on the application.

Skills and Knowledge: Evidence of prior experience creating plans, campaigns, and creative materials (portfolio available, for example).Excellent oral and written communication. Design skills are essential; also, working with power point and web-site design. Knowledge of content management systems like WordPress. Additional experience with CRM tools, managing web sites, and ability to track metrics associated with marketing campaigns. Prior experience managing others helpful (managing student workers).

Preferred Qualifications: Three years of experience in marketing and communications.
