Campbell Rutledge Jr. and Eleanor Rutledge Chair in Management (Entrepreneurship)

Job No: 496608
Position Type: full-time
Location: Lewisburg, PA
Categories: Management & Organizations

The Freeman College of Management at Bucknell University invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track position in Entrepreneurship at the associate or full professor level to initiate the endowed Campbell Rutledge Jr. and Eleanor Rutledge Chair in Management beginning in Fall 2021. The successful candidate will join the College's Management and Organizations Department and will be responsible for developing an academic entrepreneurship initiative at the University.

The approximately 600 undergraduate students in the AACSB-accredited Freeman College of Management may choose among seven highly interdisciplinary majors that combine courses in the various fields of management with offerings in the arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, and engineering. Our innovative curriculum and world-class teacher-scholars earned the Freeman College a top 30 ranking in the 2020 Poets & Quants' annual survey of undergraduate business programs. We believe that an undergraduate education that combines technical skills and deep intellectual exploration is the best preparation for thoughtful and capable leaders. New faculty members must be capable of contributing to this mission through teaching, advising, scholarship, and service.

Both the Freeman College's strategic plan and the University's strategic plan provide impetus for our search for this position. The strategic plan for the Freeman College of Management, adopted in May 2018, states that the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will provide a focus for teaching and scholarship in the College. Because addressing the SDGs requires new organizational approaches incorporating creative thinking and innovation, we are looking for a senior teacher-scholar in the entrepreneurship area to assist us in these efforts. In the Freeman College, we see values-driven entrepreneurship as an exciting opportunity to engage in these ways with our colleagues in the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Engineering. For additional information pertaining to our curriculum, please visit: https://www.bucknell.edu/academics/freeman-college-management/majors-departments.

The holder of the new Rutledge Chair will join a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem that permeates across Bucknell:
  • Majors and minors with significant focus on creativity and innovation, such as Markets, Innovation, and Design; Art and Art History, Arts Leadership; Biomedical Engineering; Creative Writing; and Theatre, among others.
  • Three Makerspaces on campus, open to all members of the Bucknell community.
  • An annual BizPitch Competition run by the Small Business Development Center on campus.
  • Affinity houses for Sustainability & Innovation and Entrepreneurship & Innovation.
  • Residential Colleges for Arts, Discovery, and Science & Technology.
  • Pre-Orientation Programs in Arts First and Design Thinking Leadership.
  • Further, we benefit greatly from numerous loyal alumni, who have founded organizations of all types and sizes, and some of whom rank among the top entrepreneurs in the nation. Throughout the year, we are fortunate to have many of them engage with our students and faculty both inside and outside the classroom.

The successful candidate for the Rutledge Chair will have an outstanding record of teaching entrepreneurship, broadly defined, including instruction at the undergraduate level. Teaching responsibilities primarily include the development and delivery of classes such as principles of entrepreneurship, and social entrepreneurship and innovation. Additional courses in entrepreneurship, strategic management, and courses in the Management and Organizations Department may also be assigned as needs arise. All courses should incorporate entrepreneurial thinking so that students taking them will have the opportunity to develop competence in innovative and creative thought directed toward organizational and societal challenges. The teaching load at Bucknell University is five courses per academic year.

Our new Rutledge Chair colleague will have an established record of scholarship, , a plan for continuing the scholarly effort into the future, as well as a strong commitment to collaboration and interdisciplinarity. Further, they will be interested in integrating opportunities for student learning into their own research program. The Freeman College supports both traditional scholarship and creative scholarship that transcends disciplinary boundaries.

At the Freeman College, we strive to recruit faculty members, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds who bring myriad viewpoints to our community, thereby facilitating the cultivation of curiosity, open-mindedness, humility, enlightened perspectives, and other valuable traits critical for learning and growth. We seek candidates who ensure respect for a wide variety of positions, raise perspectives that may not otherwise be vocalized in the classroom, and are eager to advise and mentor students from multicultural and underrepresented student groups. We welcome candidates who demonstrate excellence in reflective multicultural and inclusive teaching practices and who display a strong commitment to collaboration and interdisciplinarity.
