Departmental Overview

The Graphic Designer and Communications Specialist supports the highly visible visual, web, and social media presence for University Health Services at the Tang Center, one of the largest more comprehensive student health centers in the nation, providing medical, mental health, health promotion and insurance services to Berkeley students and a variety of wellness and occupational health services for faculty and staff.

In support of our vision for a healthy campus community that nurtures learning, working and living well at UC Berkeley, this position manages high-level graphic design collaterals, multi-media, signage and various publications, social media strategy and student social media supervision in support of the Tang Center's daily operation and special health campaigns and projects, as well as development and maintenance of UHS external web page, and other associated web and electronic communication tools. Responsibilities
  • Produces design and layout for a variety of visual communications and web site applications. Meets and consults with clients on a variety of visual and electronic communications
  • Manages all social media platforms, including strategic planning, content management, customer response and tracking, metrics and reporting, consultation and coordination with internal and external clients, and supervision of student social media coordinator
  • Accountable for ensuring technical accuracy and understandability of printed materials and website content. Works independently to maintain web and print materials, and provide support to internal staff on unit-led web and graphic needs.
  • Maintains currency with emerging and state-of-the-art technical and other web-related equipment, requirements and developments (for example, accessibility issues) and recommends and as directed, takes action to ensure compliance.
  • Coordinates administrative and technical needs in support of communication duties, including related purchasing and external vendor management, and communications production equipment management
  • Manages content planning and data reporting/metrics associated with graphic and web production.

Required Qualifications

Education/Training:
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Minimum 1 year of Drupal Content Management System experience required, plus working knowledge of HTML/CSS.
  • Must have high-level graphic design experience with Adobe Suite, including Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, with experience preparing files for print production.
  • Must have social media expertise as part of work or volunteer experience.
  • Minimum 2 years health or healthcare experience.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, editorial style, and punctuation, including skill to write in a clear and lively style.
  • Thorough understanding of technical language and requirements of the assigned work.
  • Thorough knowledge of content management systems and/or relevant web applications used for web site production, and campus-specific computer application programs. Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional web sites that provide web content consistent with the campus message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives.
  • Thorough understanding of institutional processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web communications.
  • Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and/or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
  • Thorough interpersonal communication skills. Strong customer service focus to meet client demands.
  • Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.
  • Ability to prioritize work requests, and be flexible with rapidly changing working priorities.
  • Ability to lead project and take initiative with minimal supervision.

Salary & Benefits

Other Information
