Departmental Overview

The Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, was established to integrate neuroscience faculty across the University. The broad goal is to use the power of diverse research approaches to address central questions in neuroscience.

The faculty of the Institute include over 65 researchers with state-of-the-art laboratories from the Departments of Molecular and Cell Biology, Psychology, Physics, and Integrative Biology in the College of Letters and Sciences; the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Biomolecular Engineering and Chemistry in the College of Chemistry, the Department of Environmental Science Policy and Management in the College of Natural Resources; the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute; the School of Public Health; Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Bioengineering in the College of Engineering; the School of Optometry's Program in Vision Sciences; and the Haas School of Business.

The Institute also administers the Graduate Program in Neuroscience. Students admitted to the program may work with any of the Neuroscience PhD Program Faculty and are fully supported for the duration of their graduate work.

Responsibilities
  • Experimental research support: including but not limited to: manufacture (spinning) of tetrodes, assembly of 3D printed drives, loading of tetrodes into drives, cutting and plating of electrodes.
  • Conduct post-experimental research analysis, including but not limited to: cluster-cutting of single unit data, running research analysis software, also data backup maintenance and central archiving of analysis software.
  • General lab duties including but not limited to: maintaining organization of workshop materials (such as for tetrode manufacture), daily monitoring of lab supplies, ordering of new supplies when needed, monitoring of other daily requirements including data backups.
  • Conduct research experimental projects including but not limited to: helping with preparation of surgical tools (e.g. autoclaving), research support with experiments including training animals in behavioral experiments.
  • Maintenance and daily oversight of essential laboratory documentation including but not limited to: lab drug logs, surgery logs, order invoices, laboratory purchasing card payments.

Required Qualifications
  • Coursework in Neurobiology and/or Neurobiology laboratory research experience.
  • Previous work experience in a neurobiology research laboratory preferably including: general lab management duties (e.g. ordering supplies, maintaining protocols), experience with animal behavioral experiments and experience with electrode manufacture for behavioral neurophysiology experiments.
  • Ability to handle fluctuating priorities and deadlines related to research project.
  • Must be organized, responsible, and punctual, with ability to pay close attention to details.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Education/Training: BA or BS preferably in psychology or neuroscience, or related fields and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience. This is a full-time, limited appointment of 50-100%. The incumbent is expected to work up to 40 hours per week, and may include at least one weekend shift.

Other Information

This is a variable full-time, limited appointment requiring some weekend work with an end date approximately 5.5 months from start date.

This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Research Support Professionals Unit (RX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE).
