The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers programs in nine modern languages, including majors and minors in French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish, and minors in Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, and Latin, and electives in Arabic and classical Greek. The Japanese program offers courses from the introductory to advanced levels, as well as interdisciplinary, thematic courses and general education courses offered in English.

The Japanese program at DU prepares students to become informed international citizens who develop effective Japanese language and cultural communication expertise. Our students apply their Japanese linguistic, literary and cultural competencies to a wide variety of majors, careers and future global challenges. At the same time, they deepen their empathy for and curiosity about the diversity of human experiences. Japanese clubs and events on campus provide ways to further engage with Japanese language, literature and culture. With study abroad opportunities in desirably located premium universities in Japan, our students hone their linguistic and cultural competencies while immersing themselves in contemporary Japanese life. Alumni of the program have participated in the Japanese Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program and have won the prestigious Boren Scholarship for Japanese and the competitive Critical Language Scholarship for Japanese, among other awards.

Position Summary

The University of Denver will hire a full-time, appointed Japanese teaching assistant professor, to teach all levels of Japanese language and topics classes, as well as the possibility of contributing courses in English toward the undergraduate common curriculum. The non-tenure track appointment with full benefits will take effect 1 September 2021, and is renewable with the possibility of promotion. Course load is eight (8) courses per year in a quarter calendar. Other responsibilities include: Japanese program service, assisting with developing extra-curricular cultural programming, working closely with colleagues in the program, within the Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures and across University programs and departments. The ideal candidate demonstrates experience and versatility in inclusive pedagogy. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity, equity and inclusion through their teaching and service.

Essential Functions

Teaching

  • Teaching load is eight classes over three academic quarters, focusing primarily on Japanese language and topics courses, with the possibility of contributing to the common curriculum.
  • This position will help build curricular offerings with a focus on contemporary Japanese cultural production, literature, visual culture, and/or game theory.

Service

  • Active collaboration with the department, the College and the University at large.
  • Participation in program promotional activities outside the classroom.

Research/Scholarship

  • Active scholarship is desirable and supported, though it is not a job requirement for this position.

Required Qualifications

  • ABD or equivalent in field relevant to Japanese literature, culture studies, or language.
  • Record of excellence and effectiveness teaching Japanese language to students at the college or university level.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English.
  • Ability to teach cultural studies in a Japanese context.
  • Experience or commitment to Inclusive Excellence teaching methods and/or pedagogies to engage diverse student populations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ABD or equivalent in field relevant to Japanese literature, culture studies, or language, with an emphasis on contemporary Japanese cultural production.
  • Record of excellence and effectiveness teaching Japanese language to students at the college or university level for 1-3 years.
  • Evidence of successful teaching of cultural studies in a Japanese context.
  • Experience and accomplishments in active support of diversity and inclusiveness and/or working with diverse communities.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $52,000 - $54,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
