Advertised Job Summary:The business manager provides guidance, monitoring, compliance, and analysis in the areas of financial and talent management for the units comprising Continuing Education and Conferences. The business manager is responsible for revenue projections and estimates; budget development; monitoring of budget versus actual financial activity and conducting analyses at the unit and departmental levels; ensuring adequate funding is available to meet departmental priorities and working directly with units to reprioritize if gaps exist; developing corrective action plans for units deemed at-risk financially; advising program managers regarding courses of action and compliance with purchasing and accounts payable; and monitoring accounts receivable across the department to identify and rectify trends of concern. Prepares quarterly profit/loss reports and summary-level reviews. This role must understand the nature of operations, business cycles, financial trends, and areas of financial risk for each unit and fund type, including auxiliary operations, sales and service funds, grants, loans, military funding, among others.
In coordination with director, manages department’s annual budget development of more than $3 million in auxiliary funds. Delivers training to all new staff on finance and budgeting practices, policies and procedures. Trains program managers on methods to access necessary financial reports and on system functionality that may enhance their understanding of the status of their accounts and financial position of their units. Provides supplemental information, as needed, to support effective trend analysis and financial forecasting within department. Serves as department’s purchasing card liaison and point of contact on contracts. Manages special projects as assigned by director.
Bachelor’s degree and 2 years related experience in business management, public administration, or administrative services; or equivalency.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:Ability to learn university policies and procedures. Thorough knowledge of bookkeeping and financial systems, and personnel procedures. Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential. Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365 suite – especially Excel, familiarity with database programs and CRM operation, and the capacity to learn web-based financial systems. Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret policies and procedures accurately are critical. Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations. Ability to work on a flexible basis when activities fall outside of normal working times, including nights and weekends.
