Advertised Job Summary:

The College of Arts and Sciences is looking for a highly skilled, organized, and detail-oriented writing professional to craft a variety of correspondences. This position will support strategic communications efforts by creating strong written content for print and digital distribution. This includes content for the college’s departmental webpages (events, student spotlights, etc.), feature stories, press releases, and marketing materials, brochures, newsletters, fundraising letters. The Writer will write to various external and internal audiences, including alumni, donors, and the University of South Carolina’s community. The Writer will generate compelling stories and complete other communication projects as assigned by the Director of Communications and/or the Dean of the College. Finally, the Writer will assist with media relations and social media, podcast transcripts, video captions, etc. This position will require someone with strong research skills, superb editing skills, and someone that can deliver excellent quality work.

Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions):

Master’s degree and 1 year professional experience related to the development and dissemination of informational material, or Bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

2-5 years of experience writing in a higher education marketing environment.


The Writer is able to write in multiple styles, ranging from formal press releases to informal social media posts, while maintaining AP Style. Excellent editing and proofreading skills are required. The successful candidate can work with a team to define goals for a project and work independently to gather information and complete the writing for that project. The ability to understand an audience and write to the audience’s interest is a must.
