The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Research Technician within the Mutant Mouse Regional Resource Center. The technician in this position will perform a range of duties as needed, including but not limited to: rodent colony management, maintaining records in a specialized computer database, administration of injections to mice, performing surgery on mice using aseptic survival surgery techniques, dissection of mouse embryos, setting up cultures of mouse embryos using sterile culture techniques, cryopreserving mouse embryos and sperm, collection of samples for genotyping, preparations of specialized media, preparation of sterile surgical packs, and ordering lab supplies.Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Animal (preferably mice) handling experience is required. Must be willing and able to prepare mice for surgical procedures.
Must be able to select pairs for routine breeding according to breeding scheme noted by donating investigators as well as euthanasia of animals at the appropriate time.
Ability to operate and make minor adjustments to common lab equipment to include balances, osmometer, incubators, centrifuges, and pH meter as needed with limited supervision. Ability to prepare standard laboratory media and solutions.
Must be able to follow written protocols and standard operating procedures. Observe, collect and record data and deviations from these established guidelines and present to supervisor.
Must be able to successfully carry out procedures using a microscope.
Preferred training: course work at college or community college level in biological or animal sciences (degree is desirable), vet tech or animal technician training is acceptable.
The ability to administer various injections in rodents (subcutatneous and intraperitoneal) is preferable.
Tissue culture experience is helpful.
Ability to use Office applications, database entry experience desirable.
