Position Summary:

An NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available in Dr. Margaret Gulley’s Lab ( in the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The goal of this research is to develop and implement genomic technologies to improve care of patients with cancer. Genomic assays are used for diagnosis, monitoring and prevention of disease. We collect data on the performance of assays such as NextGen sequencing, allele-specific DNA amplification (q-PCR, ddPCR), and RNA profiling (RNAseq, arrays, rtPCR). Laboratory studies of human specimens (e.g. fixed tissue, blood) are performed in collaboration with healthcare professionals to investigate mechanisms of disease and to refine analytic procedures aimed at delivering robust assays that can be implemented in routine patient care at UNC Health clinical laboratories, once analytic and clinical performance is adequate. Prior published work listed at illustrates gene tests we applied to specimens from patients with cancer, infection, heritable or inflammatory disorders. Many of these studies were co-authored by postdoctoral trainees who often delivered talks and posters at local or national meetings about their methods, results, and medical implications. Our lab has a culture of diversity, responsibility, independence, collaboration, and shared enthusiasm for medical advancements. We seek a postdoc interested in a career in healthcare or translational laboratory medicine.

The Institution and Department: UNC is a world-class research institution with state-of-the-art core facilities providing an outstanding research training environment for medical scientists. The Gulley lab is affiliated with the Departments of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine ( and the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Research Center ( as well as the clinical laboratories at UNC Health. Chapel Hill is an attractive, safe and diverse college town that ranks as one of the best places to live in the United States (

The three coequal missions of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine are to: 1) provide exceptional, comprehensive, clinically effective and cost effective pathology and laboratory medicine services to UNC HealthCare patients; 2) teach clinical and scientific concepts of pathology and laboratory medicine, and mechanisms of disease to a wide variety of learners, including medical students, postdoctoral residents, MD fellows, PhD graduate students, and undergraduate students; and 3) advance the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine, and the knowledge of diseases and disease mechanisms through innovative research spanning the spectrum from basic to translational to clinical.
The Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine performs anatomic and clinical diagnostic tests on both an inpatient and an outpatient basis, and performs autopsies, when requested by clinicians. The Department has a MD Residency Training Program in the Office of Graduate Medical Education. In the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department is responsible for the teaching of undergraduate level courses. In the Graduate School, the department has a graduate program in experimental pathology which offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

Educational Requirements:

Ph.D. or comparable degree in a biological science or related discipline with strong background in molecular biology and gene technologies.

Qualifications and Experience:

Candidates must have previous laboratory research experience. Experience in DNA extraction, library preparation for massive parallel sequencing, and bioinformatics is required. Prior work with human specimens is desired but not required. Candidates must be committed to high quality benchwork and have exceptional organizational and communication skills.
